Got a frantic call from the wife yesterday that my youngest had fallen out of a toddler chair after he decided that sitting in it wasn’t enough, he needed to stand up. Of course he immediately fell off and landed on the hardwood floor. When my wife initially tried to move him she could tell he was in a lot of pain. In an abundance of caution and because she feared either head or neck trauma she called 911. I got home while EMTs were still on-site. They evaluated him and determined no head or spine trauma, as a result we elected to take him to the ER ourselves.

X-rays revealed a broken left femur that necessitated general anesthesia to put a spica cast on (think weight belt along with most of the left leg cast). This was later in the day so as a result he stayed the night (I stayed with him sending my wife home with his older sisters). Just waiting on the safety folks to come by and show us how to set up his car seat to accommodate the cast and then we’re out of here b

While it wasn’t how we’d planned to spend our Saturday it sure beats some of the other potential alternatives from a fall like that. I will say the folks at Cook Children’s Hospital here in Fort Worth have been amazing, I don’t think we could have asked for better service or accommodation for our son.

When I originally read your title out loud to my wife (a pediatrician) I said 19 year old instead of 19 month old. When I corrected myself she said “oh, he will have a much easier time of it at that age” so take heart in that. I have 3 (18, 14, and 8) and I’ve had to go through similar with all of them. They’re amazingly resilient little creatures. Good thoughts sent your way and to your little man.

That was the exact comment from the ortho, he said as long as the bones weren’t outside the skin at his age it’s heal just fine. Not that he wasn’t going to try to get them aligned as best as he could, but as his age it was much more forgiving.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

My little 7 y/o has a broken tibia- currently in a full leg cast, so I feel for you. It sucks but it happens, right?

Awful news for a little one just getting into walking and running. Hope the healing process is quick without complications or long-term issues.

And yes, Cook Children's is among the best around.

Kids will do that. I was in Krogers once and recognized an ER Nurse. She said "hey, where is your kid? I have not seen him in a week or so"!
Highlight reel:
Face gnawed on by a dog with numerous stitches all over the head and face.
Grasped his Mothers razor sharp rotary cutter.
Multiple bike crashes.
Multiple bites from a.... Chipmunk! (they carry Salmonella and other stuff)
Good luck and I hope the kid recovers fully and quickly.

So sorry man! Cooks is a good place. I worked there as a paramedic and my sister did as an RN. Hope he heals well.

I totally read this as 19 year old as well. I was picturing a grown young man playing around in a toddler chair for some reason. I hope he has a speedy recovery and feels better immediately.
