Tannerite question: UPDATE pg 3

I assumed it's a low explosive like black powder.

Don't assume just because something is considered a "low explosive" (term often used incorrectly), that it is less dangerous. Far more people are killed by fireworks (and other low explosives) every year than high explosives.

El Dorado wildfire in California and Sawmill wildfire in Arizona were started by gender reveal parties.

I’m glad that I read the whole thread. Halfway through the first post I was think that sounds like thermonuclear grade stupidity. Then I saw the post about 80#s. Okay, I was off. 80# is thermonuclear grade stupidity, the stunt described in the OP is only nuclear grade stupidity.

Regarding the above quote, I’d argue it should be “Even better, …”. Because it is clearly illegal, that should make the decision simple - don’t do it.

UPDATE

Alright guys... Thanks for all the participation!
I can not talk them out of it. I even solicited his brother to help me convince him...

BUT

Apparently I scared them enough to get them to pursue it further.

They did a test shot with the same 4 pounds at a friend's place, they said it was loud!

They called the city PD and advised them what they intend to do.
PD looked up the jurisdiction of the address and determined it was split county and city. Then they called the on duty officer that covers that area. He was perfectly good with it, but, advised he would not be on duty that day. So they contacted the officer that would be on duty for that area that day. He was fine with it also! SO, the city gave them the green light! UN-Fucking-Believable

BUT

Stipulations
They are to courtesy call the SO and advise them of the time of Boom! Apparently it is not illegal to blow shit up in the county... Also they are asked to advise the neighbors of the event.

I have not covered backstop if any with him... Hopefully there is adequate!

I guess some credit goes to gun friendly south central Tennessee!

I went to school with the city Chief of Police and the County Sheriff both.
I trust their word, they are both stand up guys but it is not like I know them well enough to ask any favors.

That's it! I feel a lot better.

Safety and Dumb-Assery aside... Hopefully I can actually sleep tonight.

Sorry to say, the "gender reveal" party was far more of a WTF than 4 lbs of tannerite.

Well sounds like you have checked it out and gotten the okay. My first thought was if it was legal to shoot a rifle on the property. In Texas, land must be of a certain number of acres to legally shoot a firearm on it. Then, yes, 4# of tannerite is loud. Hell, 1# is loud. I have played with it but where it was legal, had a proper backstop, and I was at a very safe distance.

Mine wasn’t a gender reveal. Just blowing crap up for fun.

We blew up a beaver lodge with 8lbs one time on my buddy's property. It's loud and can launch stuff pretty far but didn't even take out half of the structure even though we buried it down inside to take advantage of the blast. I was kind of unimpressed.

So long as you have a proper backstop, it's at a safe distance from people and structures, and you make sure there's nothing around it that's going to turn into flying shrapnel it'll be fine. It's loud but the blast wave dissipates pretty quickly. I'd be more concerned about where the bullet is going to end up than what 4lbs of tannerite is going to do, assuming it's set up properly and everyone is at least 100 yards away. Preferably further.

Perfectly legal here to shoot in the county, provided you have a proper backstop that keeps the bullets from leaving your property. If you don't and those rounds impact somebody else's house, it becomes felony reckless endangerment. Backstop is important.

First thing I thought of when I saw the dog running was the (not true) story about the dynamite stick retrieving Labrador.

I can't stress this enough: The only way that it could possibly go well is if it didn't happen at all.

Not only are gender reveals a horrible narcissistic trend, these idiotic events have actually gotten people killed and have been responsible for forest fires.

No man should ever participate in such an event. No man should even consider participating in such event. Wearing a dress in public would be a more manly display than taking part in these ridiculous events.

I was at a deer camp once in tx and was the only one who hadn't killed one yet. So I was elected t to shoot the drier that had gone bad with 4 pounds in it.

I was 150 yards away with e 338 Lapua resting on top of a utv and the top of drier nearly took my head off.

Will never do that again.
