I have a friend that lives way out in the puckerbrush. Sometimes in the fall we have a pumpkin fest. Put 1/2 lb of Tannerite in a pumpkin and shoot at it from 100 yds. Great fun.
1/2 lb of Tannerite makes a big boom. The pumpkins blow up real good and the deer will later eat the remnants. Though we are in the puckerbrush, neighbors hear the boom and come to visit, typically to ask if they can join in. Even the state police have stopped by and expressed a desire to join if they were off duty.

Long story for a short point: 1/2 lb of Tannerite makes a loud boom, 2 lbs will be a significant boom. If the neighbors are not firearm friendly, expect visitors in uniform.



Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

4# of tannerite will be a big noise. We put 3# of the stuff into a partially hollowed out pumpkin that was a good 20" diameter and set it on top of an old 6x6 fence post. It vaporized the pumpkin and turned the fence post into toothpicks. Made an impressive boom even at a hundred twenty yards distance. 4# is pretty much guaranteed to bring the cops.

And yeah, gender reveal parties are really stupid.

For whatever reason, I wasn’t able to see both pictures posted before I replied last night. After reviewing both of them, please encourage your grandson to do this elsewhere. This doesn’t strike me as an ideal place for using any amount of tannerite, but strikes me as a very poor location for using 4 pounds at once. The plan, as presented, is not a good one.

I'd be surprised if they dont get ticketed.

I went shooting with a friend of the family who does explosives for movies and he mixed up a couple of pounds. He put it on top of a 18" stump and we shot it at 100 yards and it completely destroyed the thing. I had large splinters hitting my jeans.

It still amazes me that you can buy it over the counter :P

cparktd, no disrespect intended to you, but your grandson needs to understand that men should never, ever participate in gender reveal parties. It's shameful.

Secondly, detonating four pounds of tannerite in the presence of- I assume- a pregnant woman and probably children- is an incredibly reckless thing to do.

It's understandable that men are happy to play with explosives, but the pressure wave generated by the detonation of that much tannerite can propel objects through the air at great speed.

Even worse, it looks like it’s inside the city limits which makes it illegal to shoot.
I told him car alarms will be going off. He might even break windows out of nearby houses.

I told him he will be carried off in handcuffs could be charged with a felony and could lose his right to own firearms.

He is normally a pretty good hard working young man.
He loves to hunt deer, quail, turkey, and coyotes and uses… I think a suppressed 223. Yes legally suppressed.

I may be exaggerating the consequences, but then again, maybe not.

City limits?? Looks like it's practically in a neighborhood. Even in Free States there are local ordinances on where you can discharge ANY firearm, let alone a rifle! Then there's the question(s) re: a proper backstop for that round, and how far away will the spectators be, especially the expectant mother? I'd be concerned about the possibility of shrapnel, and though IANAD (I Am Not A Doctor), whether the detonation of 4# of Tannerite could cause a miscarriage at that range. As para indicated, this is an ill-advised and reckless endeavor!

1 Does the combining of ammonium nitrate, or some other oxidizer, with a sensitizer, such as aluminum powder, whether or not the compound is placed in a sealed device, constitute the criminal offense of manufacturing an explosive or an explosive weapon?

Opinion 1 Yes.

Question 2 Does the amount of oxidizer and sensitizer that are combined, or the level of the explosive capacity of the combination, affect the Answer to Question 1?

Opinion 2 No.

Question 3 Does the Answer to Question 1 change if the purpose for which a person combines an oxidizer and a sensitizer is to create an exploding target?

Opinion 3 No.

Question 4 Is it unlawful in Tennessee for a person without a federal explosives license or permit to mix the binary element of ammonium nitrate with a sensitizer to create an exploding target (ET) known as Tannerite and other various trade names?

Former EOD guy here. Tannerite is explosive grade ammonium nitrate (AN)that uses finely ground aluminum powder (AL) to create a bullet sensitive explosive. When used in 1/2lb and 1lb charges is normally a safe and fun target to play with. Targets of 2lbs and bigger need lots of space and extreme caution. 4lbs of Tannerite depending on mix of AN and AL is somewhere near 4 sticks of dynamite and not something to be taken lightly.

Here's my two cents.

First and foremost, I wouldn't be shooting a rifle there. A bullet could potentially go into the area where the homes are located. Is "Dad" willing to take the chance and pay the price for a stray bullet? If you accomplish anything, talk him out of this.

"IF" (big if) two pounds of Tannerite have been used here in the past "successfully" and without any adverse legal/LEO/neighbor/medical issues, why double the amount and risk significant issues?

Any and all negative repercussions of this will fall squarely in "Dad's" face; whatever goes wrong. He's the one pulling the "trigger" on the explosive. Does he realize this? If the shit hits the fan, all those people who talked him into this are going to scatter like cockroaches when the kitchen light comes on.

If this goes forward, ensure he gets buy-in from local LEO. If he does not, do the right thing and do it yourself before someone gets hurt or goes to jail.

Personally, I believe these gender reveal stunts are stupid.

I think we're all waiting to hear the outcome of this.

Tannerite doesn't even enter into it.
