I was on the sofa watching TV the other day and they kept playing a Taco Bell commercial (the people fighting over a box of nachos). I told my oldest daughter that I hadn't been to Taco Bell in about a year, but these commercials were making me think about going sometime.

Several days later, I'm taking a trip down to Atlanta to see mom. Decide to go a back way instead of I75. My google maps route all worked out, I take off. The map on my dash highlights EVERY single Taco Bell store between Knoxville and Loganville. Without me asking it to....

Question:
Have you had something similar or something different where you KNOW the phone was listening without your knowledge ?

Choices:
Yes
No
Maybe

One of the main reasons I ditched my Android years ago and went to Apple. Google is the worst at farming your info and selling it.

It’s all about “targeted ads”.

I shut Siri off. My wife and I noticed that we would be talking about an item, and ads for that item would show up in our news feed. Apple keeps reminding me to turn Siri back on, but I can find things w/o the help. Wish I was confident that the phone or iPad wasn’t STILL listening.

Horseshit. My wife has an iPhone, and I have no doubt it listens to us. My wife has a habit of making her coffee and then not getting to it right away in the morning so it gets cold. I commented that she needed one of those $80 electric mugs that we saw at Best Buy that we joked about. The next day her Facebook feed is advertising that very same mug on her phone.

Apple is just as egregious as Android with this crap.

Last year, my Dad had gutter guards (perforated covers installed on eavestrough to keep leaves out but let rain in) installed on his home. I have never Googled the subject because I have zero trees tall enough to put leaves in my gutters (4 year old neighborhood). The next day after discussing with Dad on the phone, I start receiving spam from the exact manufacturer he had installed.

I can't say for sure whether this was my iPhone spying on me or market research linking my Dad's purchase to me. To be safe, I turned off Siri.

Here’s a fun experiment. Start talking and halfway through your sentence, hold down the button to activate Siri. More often than not, mine shows multiple words that preceded the button press. Yes, my conclusion is that Siri is listening.

It usually happens to me when I’m telling my son he has however minutes left in an activity, or has however long to get his attitude straightened out before immediately setting a timer. Many, many times, half of what I told him is displayed in text on the screen before Siri figures out to set the timer.

I have an iPhone and Siri has never been on. I get ads in FB and other places constantly from conversations I have or things I search for.

I swung into NAPA this morning to pick up some Amsoil to my sadness they have recently been taken over by corporate and no longer carry Amsoil.

15 minutes later I had an email from NAPA for 20% off Mobil 1.

My wife and her sister both have iPhones. My daughter is into Harry Potter and my wife and her sister start talking about birthday gifts for my daughter. The next day, the sister starts seeing Harry Potter related ads. There's no doubt Apple is listening.

Absolutely! Android user. Like many here, talking about something, next thing you know ads start popping up for it when I have NEVER searched for it before.

WTF? You edited his post to delete his iPhone example and ignore other's posts about iPhone spying. Jump to erroneous conclusions much?

The difference between iPhone and Android is that Apple locks it down so only they can spy but Google lets itself as well as all manufacturer's apps spy.

No, it is not. Not even remotely close.

Unlike Android/Google/Alphabet, Apple's ToS and privacy policies clearly and unambiguously state they do not share your data or usage patterns with anybody, at any time, for any reason. Period.

Apple also has strict rules for iOS app providers that largely prevent apps from doing it, either. Apps that have been found to have been in violation of those policies have been summarily removed from the Apple store until their makers brought them into compliance.

Furthermore: Unlike Google: Apple does not, TTBOMK, do any advert serving of their own on behalf of third parties.

The only Siri issue of which I'm aware is that Apple was saving Siri snippets for human review/analysis. Ostensibly for the purpose of improving Siri's functionality. Apple recently revised that and now defaults to users opting-out of that.

Not only does Google not default to opting-out of storing "Hey Google" snippets, but, if you do opt-out, Google Assistant and voice search will stop working.

As for Facebook: They raid your browser for information. I see adverts on Facebook related to other sites I've visited and searches I've done all the time on both Firefox and Chrome on my computer. I don't recall seeing the same on Safari on my tablet or phone, but I wouldn't swear to it.

I've eliminated that nuisance on my computer browsers by always opening Facebook in a new incognito window to log in.

See item the 2nd.

For the record: My wife and I have been using iThings for about 2-1/2 years. I have Siri in "press to awake" mode and always have. I have never had adverts or map POIs appear in response to any conversation I've had, and I nearly always have my iPhone, iPad, or both nearby. And, even when I don't, I'm usually wearing my Apple Watch. My iPhone is linked to Uconnect in my Jeep, and I have used Siri via that, as well.

Apps, people. Apps and OS. Nothing I stated in my original post was incorrect. You’re less likely to get targeted ads with iOS than Android. That’s why I said Android was worse than iOS.

Do some research on how Facebook, their app, others and google are interconnected.
