I caught my first wave on a kayak today and it was awesome! I have a 11ft Dagger Zydeco sit inside kayak that I took out in the surf at Southern Shores NC. I caught some EXCELLENT waves and swamped my boat and had to drag it ashore a few times too. Thankfully my Zydeco has a water tight stern compartment that kept the boat from going under after a rogue wave flipped me.

Tomorrow I’m gonna try my luck in a 15.5ft kayak with water tight compartments in the bow and stern. It should be MUCH more resistant to swamping and nose diving on waves.

I shouldn’t have waited so long to try to surf a kayak, it is FUN!!!

Hopefully I can get some good videos to post up later.

The Wilderness Systems Zephyr 155 im taking out tomorrow has MUCH more rocker so it should cut through waves better and be less prone to going into u-boat mode (nose diving). I have a spray skirt for it which will make a huge difference. It should be interesting since the Zephyr is easy to flip compared to the Zydeco I took out today.

That sounds like fun. I have a Perception Striker 11.5 and have an itch to try that. Mine is a sealed sit-on-top. I've had it on rough bay water and it does really well.

I have not braved the surf. Yet.

I need to build up some skills more before I venture off shore but it is on the list.

I took an all-day class in surf kayaking years ago. We did time after time of surfing in, bracing against the breaking wave to avoid being “windowshaded”.
After a day my shoulder was messed up, and resulted in an impingement syndrome.
That was the last time I did surf kayaking. It was fun while it lasted, though.

I've got a Wilderness System's Radar 115, and as neato as kayak surfing sounds, I want to stay upright and relatively dry.

It was windy at Canyon Lake, Texas today, and I was getting soaked just paddling across a small area of open water. It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't forgotten a towel for my truck seats afterward.

I’m sore today! Dragging a waterlogged 11 foot kayak out of the surf and having it knock me on my butt a few times has me feeling rough today. Big Grin

I took the 15.5 foot Wilderness Systems Zephyr our today. The winds were light and the waves were about knee to shoulder high thanks to the storm offshore.

IT
WAS
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I surfed the kayak 50 yards down the line without even trying.

Having a spray skirt and 3 water tight compartments makes a yuuuuuge difference.

I had the best time ever on a kayak today. It was a fricking blast.

Launching isn’t too bad. I lined up the boat straight out to sea, waited for a wave, hopped in before the wave, tightened my spray skirt and paddled like hell. It is easier to get out past the breaker on a kayak than it is on a surfboard.

I honestly think surfing a kayak gives surfing a short or long board a run for their money. It’s great.

I’m hoping to get some videos tomorrow. A storm is supposed to roll in tomorrow but man I can wait to get my kayak back out in the surf!!!!!
