Holy Hell. I can't help you.
Part of me wants to take a trip down there.

"Nationally known collector"

I've watch the show "Hoarders" where they stack piles of garbage but, I'm thinking is there any difference between that and amassing 3 large rooms worth of valuable stuff neatly catalogued and arranged?

I get that the person has disposable income and I suppose a real life collection is better than collecting some electronic numbers in a financial account. But I would just be overwhelmed seeing all that every day.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Wow. Just wow.

I hope all that goes to good homes via a proper auction. A friend of my dad's passed early with a similar collection but heavier on modern high-end trap and skeet shotguns. Oh, and some bars of silver in the safes. The one smart kid (eldest daughter) who knew what all it was worth lost out to the guy's exwife and 2 dipshit younger kids looking for quick cash with no auction fees.

They don't think it be like it is, but it do.

That sorta reminds me of what my estate sale will probably be like...except all that my descendants will have to sell will be a Davis .32 auto and a sharp stick Frown

Friend of mine is an auctioneer and told me that auctions aredesigned to promote the "feeding frenzy" mentality.
This drives up the prices.

I went to an estate sale. Bought an old trench coat.

You really can't take it with you, and your kids are not interested. They're not even interested in the things that were theirs.

Wow! Neat auction. I do like that rolltop desk (pic 186). I would go just to see what sells and for how much, even if I didn't buy anything. Sorry, no help from me, go!

About the only advise I can give to restrict what you buy is... don't tow a trailer with you to the sale!

Do flint lock's have to be transferred via FFL? I think not, but I don't know.

Isn't there a date, like 1896 or something that anything before that doesn't have to go to an FFL or is that C&R?

The date of 1890 strikes a memory. There is a specific year, near 1890, that defines antique firearm. Before that it is an antique and does not need NICS, 4473 or any record of any kind.
