As in they are likely free to the department.

I like the thought process though maybe not the full implementation. A folding AR chambered in .300blk with a suppressor would be my choice.

KAC is right there, too, in Titusville. My grandmother and aunt live right down the road from HQ.

You're probably right; if they solicited KAC they'd probably get a positive response as this is a "for da chirrins" measure we can and should get behind.

One more thought from my perspective.
I won’t identify the originator of this statement (unless he wants me to give him credit), but this observation has stuck with me for the nine years since I first read it here:

“I think the bottom line in my experience is don’t pick the best round by what the best round to miss with is.”

That's not exactly the best strategy, pistol round against a potential rifle, but it does increase significantly the odds of the officer getting hits on target. And they won't go deaf firing it indoors.

This is exactly what something like a Rattler or Honey Badger is for. Rifle round in a very small package. But that's going to be 5x more per gun than the Kel-Tec.

I think the actions being taken by the school district are bold and long overdue. The message by the Sheriff is a great start for the deployment of their initiatives. For these actions to be successful, the LEO’s need the full and unwavering support and commitment of the school board, the school administration and hopefully the teachers and majority of student’s parents. They all need the maturity and commitment to educate the children of the positives associated with the initiatives. They need to be committed to assuage any new fears young students may have of the changes.

I have both a KT Sub 2000 and the Sub 2000 CQB.

I am surprised they did not opt for the suppressed version. I have no qualms with the choice of weapon.

My experience with Kel Tech weapons (I now have four) has been problem free and very positive through at least 800 if not close to 1k rounds. I agree with the observation that they may be considered "second tier" but I don't believe that should factor too much into the decision.

The success of a solution usually depends upon your point of view

The choice might also include some “the best gun is the one you have with you when you need one” attitude as well. Or, a 9mm rifle on hand beats a 223 rifle locked in the patrol car.

How much weight does an LEO already carry between a duty belt and vest? (Honest question, I have no idea) I would think there would be an acceptable trade off between the optimal weapon for when you know you need one right now and what you keep with you all day long just in case. I know the pistol I carry daily is not the pistol I reach for at home when something goes bump in the night.

I’d have spent the additional money on H&K MP5A3SD or MP7 SMGs.

Figure 25-40 pounds, depending on exact equipment.

The Florida sheriffs association is sharing tactics and ideas amongst other Florida police agencies. They are following and implementing lessons learned after Parkland shooting. They are implementing best practices across Florida. Single school entrances. Locked doors. More security. A guardian program that allows teachers/staff to get trained by the Sheriff's training unit and carry guns in schools. SRO officers carrying long guns ON THEIR BODY. Not locked in a safe or car. But carried every day. I know of another agency in Florida that carries Sig MPX 9MM folding pistols.

Kel-Tec... not the best quality guns for the average consumer. Generally reliable. THESE guns will be assembled carefully, tested and evaluated for function by KelTec, for the important task that these guns are designed for. Caliber debates are pointless. This gun is designed to give a deputy ACCURATE fire down a 100 yard hallway at a school. Hits with anything count, misses don't. The idea is that the SRO can get hits on target quick, get the suspect to hunker down (injured or dead) and then the responding cavalry can arrive with their AR15's and neutralize the threat. 99% of the time these 9MM/40cal guns will be enough gun.

The message from the sheriff is on point, strong and no question he means what he says!! Love that type of sheriff. Sheriff Grady Judd is my hero, don't mess with his officers !!
