2003 for me, and it was a Nokia bar phone. Very reliable, and I still have it. To illustrate how attitudes have changed over the years, the first call I received on it, I was just walking into a mall, and I walked back outside to take the call.

I got my first smartphone in 2015, a Samsung Galaxy S5, also a great phone, and I still have it.

It was around 1990, I had a bag phone… can’t remember the brand. I know it was not a Motorola. It cost nearly $1 a minute to use! First smart phone.. hmmm. Not certain but I’m guessing about 2009.

My first was a bag phone. Had to be early 90’s.

Then years later went to the Motorola flip phone.

Not exactly sure of the year but my first smart was an iphone six so mid 2000 or so. Kept it a very long time. It was mostly obsolete when i got my 13pro max which days or years may be numbered now.

My first one was a “bag phone”, Nokia if I recall correctly, in 1991. I was a computer/office/data services salesman for a brief time and it came in handy with all my sales calls.

Loved the tech, hated the job.

Then came the Motorola “Bricks”, “Micro-Tac”, “Star-Tac”. Nokia “Bar” phones, my last “dumb” cp was the first Motorola Razr in 2005 or so.

My first smart phone was an HTC One in 2010(?). I got the first iPad in 2010, switched to Mac computers in 2012, but stuck with Android until 2013 when I fully embraced the Apple ecosystem and got my first iPhone, the 5s.

1999 - Nokia 5110 with American flag faceplate. 60 minutes of talk time for $19.99 per month.

2008 - Apple iPhone 3S. It was under $500 and not much more than the ‘best’ dumb phone at that time.

I've always had businesses, and I had my first phone at the age of 16 back in 1993. It was a Motorola bag phone which I took to school with me (it stayed in my locker).

I've always had the newest technology including alphanumeric pagers with our own terminals like this:

And before texting was a thing, two way pagers like this which could be used to send text messages back and forth:

My first true smartphone was the first Iphone in 2007.

1997, a Nokia 6110, a couple of years later a smaller Nokia 8210. I miss those phones, especially the 8210.

My first smartphone was an iPhone 3g in 2008-09. My last smartphone was a Samsung Galaxy S8, then gave up the smartphone world in 2020.

Had a Motorola Bag phone in the late 80's, remember it well as we lived in Cincinnati and once you got outside of the 275 loop it dropped coverage, I flew out of Indy quite a bit as it was much less expensive, and service wouldn't come back until I hit the expressways there.

First cell phone that wasn't in a bag was a Motorola MicroTAC in 1990, such a great upgrade to having a bag phone. Several Nokias over time S110 3210 Motorola V980 flip, the list goes on until the iPhone came out.

Since then just continue to feed the Apple money machine

1995 I had just gotten out of the Army and started my first job selling Fords in Atlanta. I thought I should get one because. No need to have a home phone with it and I would be the coolest

I had a credit card with Radio Shack so I went there and bought a brick looking one. Probably about 4" wide 10" long and 2" thick.

I only had it for a few months, too expensive

I didn't get another cell phone until about 2004 (Nextel) and my first smart phone in 2006 (Palm Treo) issued to me when I started a internet dept at the dealership I worked at. Talk about cool, internet, emails, send pics and such

Hard to remember exactly, but around 2001 and it was also a Nokia. Upgraded at some point to a Motorola flip phone.

First smart phone was an Apple 6S around 2010?

ETA, looked the Nokia up and mine was a 5110 or very similar.

1994 when I started a new job that involved a fair bit of travel by car. Motorola car phone mounted in my '87 Maxima.
I miss that ol' car.
First smartphone was around 2001 I think, along with a new job. Tiny iPhone 4 or whatever was the thing that period. I still had a bag phone up to then.

First cell phone was bigger than the Nokia bar, got it around 2002, but not quite Zach Morris 80s phone.
Fit in a pocket, non-folding, had an extendable antenna.
Had a Nokia [the indestructible one] for a while.

First smartphone was an iPhone, in around 2009.
Went to Samsung after that & haven't looked back.

1993. I had just bought a 1992 Toyota MR2. Had a phone installed in it. Yep, it was mounted right of the center console. It was pretty cool. I remember it being expensive to use. You didn't carry long conversation. Any calls were straight to the point.

I want to say the first smart phone a blackberry in 2007. Then it was a few Samsung before I got an iphone in 2009.

My first cell phone was a Motorola flip phone around ‘94-‘95. The gray one with the pull-out antenna.

Had several candy bar style and flip phones with browsers and texting, but my first “smart” phone was probably an HTC Android, then switched to an iPhone 4 and have stayed with iPhones ever since. Currently an iPhone 16 ProMax.

My Dad had a hard-installed cell phone in his car and my Mom had a bag phone; this would have been in the mid-to-late ‘80’s.
