Looking to get a 2Tb unit. Looks like Seagate and Western Digital are the 2 biggies. Pros/cons of one over the other? Looking to dump my iTunes music and movies/TV shows onto it from my PC to take with "over there" next month.

Most of mine have been WD with no problems. I assume you're not interested in spending the $$$$$$$$$$ for SSD?

Correct, Rob. No great loss if damaged by heat, sand, dust or 'Acts of War'. Wink

You might consider a few flash drives. Lighter, no moving parts. 256GB units are available at Costco. Take a few spares and copy your library to one that you store away in case your primary goes bad.

I use the WD Passports for my laptops and desktops. Never had a problem with any of them. Between family and myself, I have 6 of them. For storage and to backup everything using Acronis. If any of the computers crap out, I everything on the drives.

WD is a much better drive and company.
I use a lot of drives for backup purposes but I put the drive in an enclosure rather than one already engulfed in molten plastic.
Slightly more expensive but more versatile in case of issues.
Additionally, Us the WD "Black" drive or better and 2.5" is not as good as the 3.5" although the 2.5" requires no external power supply and is smaller.
YMMV

Got a Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 expansion drive in December. It is powered by the USB port, no power cable needed. It has worked fine since I got it.

$65 at Amazon:

I am also a fan of the Solid State Drives. I currently have a couple of Lexar brand drives that have been excellent. (2 years of faithful travel service.)

I have an older version of this drive and it has been flawless. Also, the drive fits nicely in this case ...

I had a Seagate, never worked right, Seagate refused to replace it. I donated it to a college computer instructor to demonstrate in his classes, bought a WD which has been flawless.

Can’t go wrong with a WD Passport. I’ve built a couple of computers from scratch and have always used Western Digital hard drives and have never had a problem.

I have a WD External Drive 2tb and barely used half of the space in the few years I've had it.

Only problem I have with mine is the stupid power cords keep breaking the wire to be specific at the end where it plugs into the wall. It's so dam thin and a piece of flimsy copper, I'm on my 3rd one right now and it's now doing it from the end you plug into the drive. Now I have to rotate the cord to get it to work.

They are like 6-8 bucks shipped off Ebay still I babied the last 2 cords and even leave the power end in the wall so not to damage it.

If they have a model that runs off the USB cord only, then I would totally spend whatever extra money the difference is to avoid these headaches.

I usually back up mine at least every 2 weeks to every month.

Multiple WD Passports in my office. Mostly used for computer imaging.
Never had a problem & a couple of them have been banged around pretty well.

Big +1. I would use multiple SSDS if necessary over a large HDD.
