Mosquito that kills Dragonflies ?
Awhile back in my backyard I saw a very large mosquito looking insect kill a dragonfly by spearing it while in flight. It speared it from what I could tell directly between it's eyes and then flew off with it. I have never seen this before and have lived in Florida where dragonflies and mosquito abound for 61 of my 67 years. A google search returns nothing. Anyone know or heard of this before? And no I had nothing to drink or smoke either before I saw this happen.

Some wasps are predators of dragonflies.

That would be my educated guess as well...when I was a kid we called them "fly catchers" because we would often find them sucking down horse flys...back in those days I was pretty much scared shitless of them Big Grin...now insects intrigue me.

You must be thinking of the Mosquito hawk...

Along these same lines...one summer while riding the lawn mower I had a fly land on my arm and before I could brush it off a dragon fly pounced on the fly and carried it off. I had never seen that before and was rather impressed. I had never heard of, or seen, another insect attack a dragon fly before today. That would be something to see.

When I lived in south Louisiana in the late 50's we referred to the dragon flies as mosquito hawks.

I’ll just comment that I love to watch dragonflies. The best flyers in the insect world that I know of. Kind of the opposite of the lumbering june bugs that I’d see crashing into our lit porch when I was a kid in Missouri.

Serious about crackers.

That's what I thought too, till I saw one speared right between the eyes by another insect!
