I was at the Scheels in Reno this last Sunday. Most of the handgun selection was wiped out. The did have a LWRC SMG45 pistol and a HK SP5 in the display case, kinda took me by surprised.
Talked to one customer who just bought a handgun. Scheels would only sell him one box of ammo. Guess you have to buy a gun to get the ammo... And the guy said the background check was so backed up he had to wait two weeks to pick up his gun.
Crazy times

I've been in the industry since 98 and I have never seen demand like this. Keep in mind that firearms consist of dozens of parts made by multiple firms. Your Sig, Ruger, Smith etc isnt made 100% in house. If for example your spring supplier can't get you enough springs, guns aren't moving out the door. If your forecast is based upon prior years demand, and current orders, your're hosed as well.
I don't have an inside source, but Remington comes to mind. Remington could be cranking out nothing but 870 defense guns right now and sell every damn one of them. Thousands, 10s of thousands. I wonder if ACME Spring, or ACME Screw CO, or ACME Buttstock CO, feels comfortable sending product to a company that has questionable finances.
Food for thought.
You cant just whip the horses and get more of a complex consumer durable.

Got a birthday gift certificate for Cabelas. The last thing I need is another firearm but I was thinking I might find something of interest in the library. When I was last there, probably in February, they had a decent selection of used guns. Not this time. Most of the pistol cases were empty and the few guns there were second hand Ruger .22's. In the new gun section, it was pretty much the same thing. A few Kimbers and a Springfield or two. Again, multiple empty display cases. Remembering the recent history with Dicks, I asked one of the salesmen if they were getting out of the gun business. He said no but that ever since Covid 19 hit, they have been cleaned out of inventory. Later, a friend told me, he encountered similar situation at his local Bass Pro Shop. I know that gun sales have been brisk lately but I am suspicious. Local gun shops seem to have their normal inventory. With the combined buying power of Bass Pro/Cabelas, seems to me they shouldn't have any problem getting guns from distributors. Perhaps in the politically correct climate we now find ourselves, they are preparing to limit themselves to T shirts, boat shoes and wildly overpriced fishing gear.
