Wow! That would surely be a check your shorts moment. Glad he made it out unscathed.

People think I'm ridiculous when I stand at the end of the service bay at Discount Tire and watch the tech(s) torque down each lug nut after they rotate the tires on my truck.

I just changed my shocks on all four corners. When I remounted the wheels, I torqued them twice, drove it around the block and torqued them again. They’ll stay put.

Wife's Nissan Pathfinder required the in tank fuel pump be replaced. The Nissan dealership replaced the pump but when re-installing the tank, did not re-install the filler neck onto the tank. Wife stopped on the way home to fuel up and dumped maybe three gallons of gas onto the hot exhaust system of the vehicle before fuel flowed out from under the vehicle and she stopped pumping. I took it back to the dealership, got the general manager in an office and chewed him a new one, after which I told him I was contacting my attorney. Though I was never happy with that vehicle or the dealership, we ended up with free service and detailing for the remainder of the time we owned the vehicle. In hindsight, I should have taken them to court instead.

My girlfriend took her 2021 Toyota Rav4, which she purchased new in June, back to the dealer for her first oil change at 5,000 miles last Thursday. She asked them to look at the brakes because they were squeaking in the morning when she pulled out of the garage. After the service, she left the dealership and made it about 1/4 mile down the road when the steering wheel began to shake and she heard a metal grinding sound so she pulled into a Kia dealership parking lot. As she was pulling into the Kia dealership, she observed the driver's side front wheel come off and go across the road. Apparently the technician didn't put any lug nuts back on the wheel.

About 2 years ago we had someone around here loosening lug nuts in shopping mall parking lots. Walmart was the usual target.

I heard...he finally got caught by someone in the act, and that was the end of that.

Missing person on facebook for a while.
I've been leery about this every since though, and if this is coming back, I better pay attention again. I've only ever encountered it after maintenance, and only once was it a big deal. Of course it was the one time my wife had maintenance done while I was out of town and then drove the car hundreds of miles to meet me. One wheel lost one nut, and 2 more were loose on that wheel. I saw it when she drove up. Really lucky there was no damage, lucky those two tight ones were opposite each other.
