A shirt which reads on the back "It's Great To Be A Cougar"

One of the other women asked the principle out loud and in front of the whole faculty "Do you really expect ANY of the women here to wear this?"

The principle was clueless and stated "yes, it would be nice if you would on Fridays and possibly around town to show pride in your school."

He really is that clueless.

I think it's great that the guy was not familiar with this trashy term which- apparently- we're all supposed to know about.

The guy isn't clueless for not knowing this trashy term. It's not something official in society. It's just a pop culture slang term, and a trashy one at that. Good for him that he wasn't aware of that stupid crap.

When I was in high school we received some shirts promoting something student council was involved in. There were two hands on the front.

Nobody thought anything of it until the first female tried one on.......

Para, while I thoroughly respect your observation, and anyone else's with the view, 100% of the women at that school agreed they would not wear the shirt off campus.

Sometimes the most innocent of comments can have its meaning easily twisted through inference and connotation.

I think it's hilarious, hopefully it is in the school colors and has a pic of the mascot on it and not just the text. That would make some difference...

People need to lighten up, have a little laugh at their own expense sometimes and quit looking for reasons to be offended.

I'd would so encourage my wife to wear it...

I'm assuming the shirt has the school's name, colors, and likely a picture of the mascot (an actual cougar I'm guessing) on it. So really, what's the big deal? Wear the shirt and stop being so juvenile, I say.

Is there any term or expression in the English language that isn’t subject to some sort of double entendre, “Tee-hee, you said ‘cougar’,” interpretation? If they wouldn’t wear such a shirt, it seems to me that they should be changing the mascot entirely. How about the Fighting Soup Cans, or something equally innocuous? Oh, wait: we all know what “can” means; couldn’t use that.

I’m curious what do they do when they go to some sort of conference with teachers or “educators” from other schools? “Oh, I understand you’re a cougar; made any new friends recently?”—snigger, snigger. I’m sure there are still juveniles who are titillated by the name of some convenience stores here, Kum and Go, but to the company’s credit they just ignore the occasional giggle.

I guess it means little to me as I have no interest any more in women who are older than me. Maybe 50 years ago....

Nope.

There's an "E" on the breast pocket and the wording is in a pinkish blue across the back.

Reminds me of the story about a group of ladies coming to see Samuel Johnson after he completed his dictionary. The ladies wished to compliment Johnson on omitting all of the "bad words" from his dictionary, and Johnson complimented the ladies on knowing which words to try to look up.

Never heard that story before- that is awesome!

"One of the other women asked the principle out loud and in front of the whole faculty "Do you really expect ANY of the women here to wear this?"

ALSO: Sounds like the principal isn't super well respected. My dad was a principal for 30 years from K-12. Sure we are in the south and I didn't love it when I was a kid but I have heard since his retirement that he was a great Principal- from students AND teachers as well as parents and others. I'm not sure the shirts would have made it to print were he in charge but I also know that someone with an ounce of class probably wouldn't have called out the boss in front of everyone- because they respected him. Someone would have pulled him aside afterwards and he would have worked it out. So, either he has not earned their respect or someone was grandstanding or, I am sure a number of other reasons exist that someone will come school me on.

My point is not really germane to the t-shirt, I guess but rather that, even a principal or person not up on pop- culture hopefully wouldn't deserve being made a fool in front of everyone. Hope it works out for all!

Up this way at least years ago, everyone wanted a Ball State shirt.

Bluffton College are the Beavers.

And of course on a short vacation one year we visited Intercourse Pa.

In high school, the girls swim team was coached by a gentleman named Richard. The girls attempted to get shirts made that said "We swim for Dick". That was nixed in a hurry.
