On our way thru the Midwest and I want to visit the arch. Where is a safe area for my wife and I? I seem to remember that the west side is better / safer. Please advise

South, Southwest. Avoid North, avoid East of the river. Others can chime in with specifics.

I stayed in St. Peter's (just north of the airport, west of St. Louis) and it was nice. I took the train downtown to get to the arch, but would suggest driving, as the train goes through rougher areas closer to the city.
Judy a note on the arch, if you are claustrophobic or on the larger size, make sure to sit in the sample team before buying your ticket. It is tight quarters! I loved it, but no way my wife would have been able to go (she gets nervous in regular elevators).

Good. The arch is worth seeing, and going to the top. The museum below the arch is pretty cool. There also used to be a neat movie on the making of the arch, but I'm not sure they still show it.

Yes, avoid the north side of the city, and the Illinois side (E. St. Louis). If you are looking for a place to stay, South County or West County.

Avoid staying at any hotels in the Clayton area. When some protestors have been arrested in St. Louis County, the rest always go to the Justice Center in the middle of downtown Clayton to protest. Homewood Suites in Richmond Heights is safe. It is close to the Galleria but still far enough away that there shouldn't be any problems if protestors show up again. -Lots of good hotels further out I64/40 area in the Chesterfield area. Lots of good hotels to stay at in the Maryland Heights area and I70 corridor near the St. Charles County line (Missouri River).

When going to the Arch, try to avoid the area around the St. Louis City Police Headquarters (you should have no problems avoiding this area and getting to the Arch). Avoid going to the Arch during Cardinal game times.....disrupting a Cardinal game is the stated goal of the protestors.

Yeah, it's an unusual design. I remember waiting on stairs and then squeezing into the sort of gondolas. IIRC, the windows up top were not very large. It's still worth a visit.

The Arch grounds are federal land and you can't carry there. If you want go to the top you have to pass through a metal detector.

South and west as already mentioned. But what hasn't been mentioned is that there are I think three motel chain locations along Interstate 44 at Hampton. I believe they are Drury, Holiday Inn, and Red Roof Inn. I can't speak to the accommodations themselves, but the location is safe and very convenient to anything you want to do in the city.

Maybe leave your car or truck at home and take a Stryker.
