Digital License Plates
coming to a surveillance state near you...I think this is an abysmally bad idea...unless they want to pay me to drive with their plate, I'll stick with stamped metal

Only $500-800! I certainly hope those who opt into advertisements receive a cut for the price you pay for the plate.

I'm not sure that I "get it" here. The biggest potentially goal would be to track them, but that's already pretty doable with transponder type systems like many places use for tolls or with an advancement of RFID technology. Both low tech solutions that don't cost a lot. I see applications for smart parking systems where the plate will indicate if parking has been paid for, a car has been parked over hours or something, but it's hard to see a feature to this that is truly to the benefit of the vehicle owner or driver.

I’ll take one!!! And let me tell you why...

Exactly how long do you think it will be befor some enterprising individual jailbreaks one? It could actually be easier to roll with “fake” tags once the security of the system is compromised. Whatever verification and authentication systems are in place will be of .gov quality, after all.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

Only if I can make is display custom messages too. Like, "Back off, dickhead."

And after a collision (or vandalism) you need to shell out another $800 for a replacement? Not me.

The first state to implement the plate is California. That should be all you need to know to recognize this is a really bad idea.

Another example of a major solution in search of a non-problem:

Oral-B Pro 7000 toothbrush

It has six modes and Bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone app that provides real-time feedback and a record of your many usage parameters.

$130 for a toothbrush! Eek But it doesn't play music through your teeth or take pictures inside you mouth (yet).

Sure, sounds like a great (?) idea to me. Let's see here, five to eight hundred dollars a plate plus a monthly service charge. Two cars, and probably some point the two motorcycles. Not to mention the two cars with historic plates.

Our state raised vehicle licensing awhile back and our "progressive" Governor is proposing more hikes to "Fix the damn roads", her campaign speech.

Best part, in the 80's they changed the license fees from weight based on passenger cars and light trucks to a fee based on MSRP. So if you are lucky enough to be driving a 1985 Pontiac you are paying on what the car sold for new.

Yeah, this should work out just fine......

How many times will you have to get pulled over because someone stole that $800 plate off your car before you realize it's a bad idea.

Remind me to never register a car in Michigan.

Yeah, it did occur to me the one could either hack one, or make your own that looks like one of theirs and can be controlled by the driver to say whatever you want it to. What could possibly go wrong?

Uh... Thanks but no thanks. As previously posted, tag fees in Michigan are outrageous. Mine were 275 this year. And that along with our exorbitant no fault insurance and crappy roads.
But we have to bail out Detroit and fix the water in Flint. So no real surprise where the money goes.
