Get my pies

Within the past week or so my feet have suddenly become very achy which is not normal. I have this sensation that I've been standing for hours on end in my feet when I have not been, just like that tied achy foot sensation. It's constant.

Should I be concerned? Should I get to the doctor? I can't walk around my house barefoot or in socks, it's like I have to have some sort of shoe on at all times or it's even worse.

I've never had foot issues before and in my previous life as a chef would regularly be on my feet with no breaks for 8-12-16 hours at a time and never had a problem. That was over 15 years ago now though.

I'm 46 and 6 feet and pushing 235-240 lbs which I know is not ideal. I really should be at or below 200 lbs.

Any ideas?

Give them a call at a minimum.
When was your last physical?
Have you changed your footwear recently or walked on more hard surfaces than normal?

You should see a doctor to make sure it's nothing more serious (e.g. foot pain from diabetes) than plantar fasciitis.

I have bouts of plantar fasciitis but [knock on wood] I have not had a bout since going to the Powersteps linked below [/knock on wood]. Last bout, I bought:
  • a boot/splint to sleep in and use in recliner. Rarely could wear an entire night, but it did stretch everything out. In hindsight, I'd buy again.
  • Assorted foot rollers. My trainer pointed out that it was a waste of money as it was the same diameter as a frozen water bottle which has the bonus of icing while rolling.
  • Arch supports in modern shoes is a paper thin joke no matter how much you pay. I have installed these Powerstep Pinnacle Shoe Insoles in all of my shoes and my slippers (they had removable insoles and Powersteps are much better on my all ceramic tile floors). In hindsight, I'd buy again.

    First thing I thought of.

Coincidentally, a co-worker of mine found out he has this and was just telling me about his condition last night.

I don't know if this means anything but it seems to bother me way more if I'm sitting still, off my feet than on them and walking around. It's weird.

At the least start stretching your achilles, like sprinter stretches. It will stretch the bottom of your feet, if PF is your problem you will notice a difference. I have to get a shot every so often to relieve mine. Stretching seems to keep it at bay quite a bit.

See your physician. Lots of possiblities here, lots of different treatments. Standard bloodwork and physical exam. Simple.

That's how my last bout of plantar fascitis started. During the work day, my foot felt horrible sitting in a meeting, first 2 minutes of walking after sitting were like walking with my foot asleep, and then it seemed to "stretch out" and I could walk at a normal speed. It'd start all over once I sat down at my desk or in the next meeting room. That was just the 1st stage and it got much, much worse.

Like I posted earlier, I recommend getting a diagnosis from a doctor. They'll look for something much more serious (e.g. diabetes) once that's ruled out they can determine if it's gout, plantar fascitis, etc. Treating gout is much different than treating plantar fascitis.

Start with GP but might need neurologist. Could be a form of peripheral neuropathy. Plantar fasciitis is usually worse when you get out of bed in the morning and gets better during the day, the opposite of what you expect.

I was just about to ask about that very thing. Sounds very much like plantar fascitis. I had a bout of that last year that was BRUTAL and took about 3 months to heal. Go see your GP to make sure it isn't something else and they'll give you some stretches and exercises that will help minimize the discomfort while it heals up.

I got an appointment with the foot doc this week and have been going back over the past 2 weeks to see what could have caused this and I think I realize where I done messed up.

We went to Ocean City, NJ for a day trip on 7/26 and normally we have a house right next to the beach but this being just a day trip we had to park pretty far from the beach and walk. I walked all that way to the beach from my car in flip-flops, then walked around a bunch on the boardwalk, then carried my son (4 years old) for about a block and a half on said boardwalk because he was crying about having a chafed crotch, then I walked all the way back in those flip-flops. Probably did 3+ miles that day including the part where I'm carrying a 4 year old. Most of it on concrete sidewalks and the wood boardwalk.

I think that did NO favors for my feet which had been sore here and there for little stretches but nothing like now.

Had a similar problem a couple months back, figured out it was a pair of Nike running shoes, not cheap either. I can only guess it's a lack of arch support in my case

A couple years ago I was having a lot of pain in my right foot. Dr ended up taking a tumor out of my foot the size of a ping pong ball. Now I have a 3 inch scar on the bottom of my foot near my arch.

Can't hurt to get checked out. I'm 48 though, and I have the same issue. Used to think it was from running a lot. Now I think it's cause I'm old. I have GOT to have inside shoes. Maybe that's the deal with Mr. Rogers too?

I have PF in my left foot and using the boot splint when sleeping has be very helpful. It’s counter intuitive to think stretching out the plantar ligament helps in healing.MG

They can zero in and isolate the issue properly.
Guess work is not a good plan of action, IMO.
