I don't know about Jews, but Baptists do it in small towns in the South.

Houston Second Baptist Church 6 locations in the Houston area. I visited a few times the first time I lived in Houston.
Houston's First Baptist "only" has 4 locations. I was an active member here the first time I lived in Houston.

I have. I took a photo of one somewhere. I've even seen a 3rd Baptist Church.

Abn556There is theology and then there is dogma. As a former Catholic, I recall this topic resulting in many heated conversations as people twisted themselves in knots to explain how it became part of the dogma, but it was based on theology. Remember, Catholics decades ago were told not to read The Bible as the priest needed to interpret it for them.
Now that I am in the Baptist church, when my still Catholic wife asks me about giving up something for Lent, I ask her if she would fast for Ramadan.

Ah, the NIV, right? The answer is simple, unclean meats were not considered food. This passage really is concerning the question of ritual hand washing. Some also consider that parenthetical part a later addition or a simple twist in the translation. For context Mark 7:3-4 can be helpful.
Just to be clear, when I say to use context, I’m not just saying use the verses before or after, I’m also saying use the worldview of the writers and audience. It’s just not possible that Jesus said it’s ok to eat swine meat to devout Jews. And had that got out to the Pharisees, Jesus would have been easily discredited.

I'm pretty young in my journey with Christ. I started by reading the scriptures first and then trying to reconcile popular Christianity with them. As you are obviously well aware, popular Christianity cannot be reconciled with the scriptures. It is good to see someone else who takes the scriptures seriously and doesn't simply swallow the traditions of the churches.

The traditionalist Greeks give up meat for 43 days. On Friday’s we were not allowed to eat any living being (octopus, calamari, shrimp No blood animals). It’s is all church doctrine and I haven’t participated since I married a Protestant Viking girl 25 years ago. Mom and the family still follow the rules.
