I would like to spend more time on the deck but the evening sun is a pain and shines right in your face. The deck is almost ground level and does not have a roof. A traditional awning would do nothing for the evening unless it has some sort of side shade. Doing some research I found awnings are close to 2k. I really dont want to spend that much right now. I also dont want some makeshift framing to hang a curtin. Anyone have any ideas of what to do?

Triangle shaped sun shade sails seem to be getting popular.

We've got the same problem. Didn't used to be quite so bad, as we had a mature maple to off the SE corner and a very mature wild cherry off the SSW corner. Alas: Storm did in the maple (just as well, as it was a silver maple that was too close to the house, anyway) and age took the cherry.

Southern exposure, so afternoons on patio are downright brutal. As a consequence: We don't spend much time out there at all. Used to, before the trees went away.

Rotate your chairs to face east, it's a simple low cost solution Big Grin

What about planting a couple of trees, 8 to 10 foot tall plantings would knock some of it down.

We have a western facing section and some of the same problems in the summer and have put in a roll down side curtain from Home depot, however you'll need something to bolt it to obviously.

You could build a trellis/pergola yourself which offers some shade but the open look and then the roll up curtain at the end. or just one wall of it with shade lattice to help.

This was my first thought also.

That would have been my solution, too. We see a lot of these out here, they seem pretty durable.
