wcb6092She threw her son a six-figure 'Black Panther' prom party with a real panther. Now she faces charges of welfare fraud
https://townhall.com/tipsheet/...lfare-fraud-n2511023A Philadelphia mom known for throwing back-to-back years of extravagant prom parties which cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars has been charged with welfare fraud, according to the Associated Press.
Prom is quite possibly the dumbest and most expensive American tradition to date.* Hundreds of dollars are typically spent on tuxedos and corsages for the boys while the girls spend even more on make-up, hair, and dresses for one night of awkward dancing. But, for Sheila Shuler, no cost was too much for her prom-send offs in 2017 and 2018.
In 2017, she threw a Dubai themed party for local high schoolers that cost $25,000. Then, in 2018, she spent 6 figures on a prom send-off party in honor of the movie 'Black Panther.' She even brought a live panther to the party. At the time, Shuler said she "had a contest this year that asked kids in her North Philadelphia neighborhood to send their report cards and essays explaining why they deserved to have an epic prom send-off" and ended up inviting 24 kids. Neighbors and parents supposedly pitched in for the audacious affair. Shuler dressed up as "as Queen Mother Ramonda" and party guests were entertained by African dancers and people wearing "custom costumes."
But, on Tuesday Agust 14th, "The U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia announced charges of wire fraud, theft of government funds and Social Security fraud." According to the government, "Shuler applied for benefits, describing herself as disabled and unable to work, but continued working — including operating a restaurant — costing the government more than $36,000."
Her attorneys argue that she "suffered a stroke, was in rehab and couldn't do anything for two-plus years."
According to The Root Beth Leahy, deputy chief of Health Care and Government Fraud for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said the alleged fraud has been going on since 2014. Leahy added, “You can’t take what’s not yours..she said that she was disabled and in terms of assets said that she only had $30 in her bank account. As far as quality of life, she said she rarely could make food for herself and had a cousin that cooked for her.”
Likewise, "If convicted, Shuler could face up to 140 years in jail, along with a period of supervised release, and will have to cough up some $36,785.67 to the government, on top of a fine and a special assessment."
A trial date has yet to bet set, but her attorney assures that “things are not always what they appear to be. These are just allegations without any meat or any substance.”

ScurvyDumbest and most expensive tradition?!
Have they never been to a wedding or a funeral?
A few hundred bucks for a night of fun versus 10s and 10s of thousands of dollars?!

ZSMICHAELSomething about this story does not add up. The amount she was accused of stealing was not much by governmental standards. The government likes to roll out stuff like this to make it look like they are making a dent in the fraud that occurs in the social security disability program.

Probably coke and related consumables.

PASigThese people are so ghetto, they spend thousands on proms and things but live in the hood in run-down houses in the middle of a war zone. As soon as I read North Philly, I knew all I needed to know.

erj_pilotI'm sure we ALL have our ideas about welfare reform, but for starters, I don't think ANYONE on "welfare" should be given...yes, GIVEN...more than the current year median income for each specific year. IDGAS how many illegitimate babies they pop out...

Why are these attorneys not disbarred and charged with fraud?

The attorneys advocate for the client. The Administrative Law Judge awards disability.

recoatliftInfuriating! Ghetto trash that is a constant drain.

ZSMICHAELIf the government wanted to really do something it would beef up the fraud division for social security disability. Busts like this make headlines but do little to stem the ongoing problem. Sorry I am pessimistic.

Johnny 3eaglesHow the hell can she afford an attorney?
If you're goin' through hell, keep on going.
Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it.
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

downtownvIf you ever get the opportunity to drive up Broad Street into North Philadelphia you wish you had more on you then that popgun in your holster.
You'll wish you were in a Humvee with a 50 Cal mounted on the roof.
The only part of Philadelphia that most people see is this inner city area the Liberty Bell, Genos and Pats Cheesesteaks etc.
The rest of the city for the most part isn't any different than Detroit. You would see more litter and trash on the streets than in the garbage cans. When mayor Wilson Goode ordered the dropping of an incendiary bomb on the MOVE Group, he surely knew it wasn't big enough.
The government for the past 50 years has suppressed these people and kept them in poverty with their generous welfare programs. This was the breeding grounds for the likes of a Barack Obama.

North broad can be a bit sketchy in spots, but the rest from City Hall down to the Navy Yard is just fine.
And stay out of Kensington. You’ll get butt fucked there.
