I don’t have a clue if the tools just above what I’m typing is standard for any forum or if it’s specific to SigForum.

If it’s standard, is there a tutorial I can read or watch to understand all of them? I know how to use BOLD and ITALICS, and the color palate and smiley faces are easy enough, but I’d like to learn what all of them are.

In my experience the series of tabs in the horizontal green line are unique to SIGforum. Looking at the source for the page, my guess is these tabs (Go/New/Find/Notify/Tools/Reply) are created by scripts in the code of the forum website.

They don't do anything permanent or weird (you won't accidentally void your waiver or get sent any iffy cakes!) so I'd suggest the best way to learn them is to click on them and play around, which is how I figured them out.

The Advanced Search under the Find tab is a gem and works great.

I could be very wrong, but I think BBcode is the root of this thing.

Have a look here, at WordAnvil for a pretty fair list of BBcode tags and examples.

That said, I think the site software may or may not support all of the available tags.

Oh, and here is a TON of BBcode emojis. Wink

The OP is talking about the tools that appear when actually posting.

Straightshooter1 is correct. I’m talking about the tools above the typing box when you are posting. The dark green tabs that start with the emojis. Can anyone tell me what each of them are?

But thanks for the info on BBcode.

Most of the boxes are for formatting or otherwise dealing with text.

One is to make the text bold, another to italicize it. You can combine them. You can post text with a line through it. The quote feature puts the text into a separate, easy-to-see block in the post. It’s possible to change the color of the text font. To post a picture, use the block that has the small landscape image and it puts [IMG] at the beginning of a link to a picture and /IMG in brackets at the end. That feature requires having a picture on a separate hosting site for images.

All of those things can be done without using the blocks if they are typed in manually, such as typing [b] at the beginning and /b in brackets at the end to bold the text. The provided tools just makes it easier.

I never use the list, code, email, and video features, so I’m not familiar with how they work. I assume email and video are for links similar to the picture feature.

As has been said above, the tools/buttons are for formatting your post via BBcode, all they do is insert the BBcode tag for you.
Basically, Bulletin Board Code uses a command/keyword inside brackets (the tag) before what you want to format [keyword] and then at the end, you stop the format with a slash [/keyword]. The webpage & browser interpret the tag & formats the text accordingly. This was an evolution of plain-text only bulletin boards in the early days of the internet. It's really helpful when trying to share code snippets in languages that spaces matter. Using a tag for that language will format it correctly when you copy/paste, whereas the text-only version can mangle spaces/tabs and cause some forehead-shaped dents in keyboards.

If you've ever heard the slang 'slash <something>' to mean full-stop, this is where it came from.

Here's a short & sweet description/example of a few common.
phpBB

There is a lot more you can do than there are buttons in the reply window & forums can add/block/modify just about anything. It's a VERY loose standard. If Para wanted to, he could cause any tag to insert a link to RockRoll us all.

Thanks for all the additional explanations.

If I click on one it says copied! and I can paste it in my text, but it disappears when I post the message.
How do I copy the code rather than the image?

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
