I have received a Discover card alert on finding my SS# on the web. Even tough I've had a card hacked, that's a first here. I've checked suggested credit report, and do not see anything new. Is this a typo, or the beginning of a bad story? What does the hive think?

I'll bet that most people's SS numbers can be found someplace on the Dark Web.

I agree with the suggestion to lock the credit reporting agencies.

There have been so many data breaches that I suspect most people have their SS number on the dark web. The National Public Data breach is only the latest.

Lock your credit. It is a PITA, but do it.

I got the same alert. Back in the military days, my SS number was on all my checks.

I’m normally all frozen up, back to that soon. I unfroze to refinance, then change my Discover account to remove the ex wife.

I’m set to automatically refreeze, I may hasten it, since I’m done with any need to be open.

In early 2024 there was an event known as the Mother of all Breaches wherein data from 26 billion people was compromised. Much of the data came from companies you never heard of but are used by healthcare, insurance and other companies to perform select tasks. At this point in time it is reasonable to believe that your data was compromised. Act accordingly.

Two factor authentication on everything you can. Put locks on with all credit agencies (even if you don't use credit, they have your data).

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

Here's the legitimate site that explains the way to put a credit freeze on your account at all three credit reporting agencies. Everyone should have a credit freeze, even if you don't have a known risk beyond normal.

It's free, no need to pay the people that market a service that's free.

You set it up and it can be unfrozen for short periods of time if you need to apply for a credit account of some sort. That process is simple and also free.

You can get one free credit report from all three credit bureaus each year. Do that at one agency every four months (they all have the same basic info) and that will give you free reports all year long.

Back in the day, when officers got promoted, your SS was on the list that was entered into the Congressional record. It's out there.

TY guys. Tho there isn't anything on credit reports yet, agree it seems best to lock down credit. There is a Carlos in Las Cruces NM shown on the Discover card search with the SS#, does this need any other attention?

States involved in the ERIC voter registration management scam have handed out your personally identifiable information (PII) without safeguards. Even Texas did this!

Never let a company use your SSN or even the last four digits of your SSN to identify you. Refuse. Let them know they use it at THEIR risk, not yours.

As recommended above, freeze your credit. You can always unfreeze it temporarily when you apply for a loan or line of credit.
