I've been using one like the XYK BBQ Grill Scraper for years.

It has slots that fit just about any grill grate type.
No worry about bristles. On Amazon and inexpensive, too.

I use the tool RogueJSK pointed out plus a steam clean approach using GRILLART Grill Brush Bristle Free, SteamWizards available on Amazon. Let the steam do the work.

My daughter had a metal sliver caught on the inside of her lip. Fortunately people at her work (hospital) saw/found it and were able to pull it out. Pretty scary.

Holy smokes. it's a miracle the doc figured it out. It's not like she had a hairball of bristles in her stomach. Plus removing them must have been a bear to locate and pull out.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. I grill or smoke on average 3-4 days a week and have tried a lot of brushes over the years. The absolute best thing I ever used to clean the grates is grill bricks. Only used on a clean grill but I just hit it before I light the charcoal and wipe with a damp shop towel.

I offer this here as a suggestion. I don't ever use wire grill brushes because my intuition is that the bristles could break off in whole or partially and be ingested. In this case, my pessimism was accurate.

I heat the grill, and with a large soaking wet rag, I wipe down the surface being careful not to burn my hands. The instant steam does a fabulous job of cleaning the surface. Also be careful that the steam does not burn you. But I'm telling you, that grill surface is quite clean when done right. Old t-shirts work good for this.

I heard about this issue years ago and switched to the plastic bristle brushes.

The plastic bristles are larger diameter than the wire bristles, but any less dangerous ?
