Some guy on Facebook market place was selling an old Ahed GBX Super Bug amplifier. An odd-ball to be sure. I had to look it up and there's not much to find. It's a bit rare (that's not to imply it's valuable, just not too many are out there anymore).

I wanted to mess with something solid-state so I went to check it out. It worked, sounded different and looked like the company was trying to be different for being different's sake. I was intrigued but had no idea what to offer. There is no market for them. He asked $100 so I took it home.

I'll tear it down, swap out any bad capacitors and clean/replace the potentiometers. That should make it good to go.

I looked it over some more and got a little bit excited when i saw this:

Eek Two Rola made vintage Celestion G12M "greenbacks"!!

I'd say I made a good deal. I think I'm going to swap one of the speakers into my Marshall DSL40C to see if it makes a difference over the Celestion 70/80 that everyone hated in that amp.

My guess is you did just fine. Should be a fun amp to play through.

Man, nice score on the Greenbacks at the very least! I’ll be looking forward to seeing how the amp turns out when you’re done with it. I’ve never heard of those.

My #1 amp, Marshall 1987xl (and I have a lot). I sniped it on eBay for $627, listed as "for parts only." It just needed tubes and I had it running five minutes after I unpacked it. Absolutely love this amp. Tone for days.

would love to find a nice basic tube practice amp. For next to nothing or close to it...

Yeah, I've always been a Marshall guy. I've tried others and always find my way back. I had a 1972 Super Bass, it was a beast, it was unreliable, I loaned it to my brother and he sold it. (I told that story here before.) I actually favor the DSL series over the vintage stuff. Super versatile even though I usually only use the clean channel with pedals.

I'm primarily a Fender amp guy, vintage Silverface and Blackface models, but I like something about most of the well known ones from Marshall, Vox, Boogie, and the rest.

Lately I've been thinking of picking up a modern Supro Comet after hearing a friend's recently and then checking out lots of online videos and reviews. I love that sound, too.

The speaker manufacture date codes show June 18, 1973 and June 19, 1973. Neat.

I'm working on a deal to buy a DSL50 head that needs repair for $200. I don't need it, but at that price, I want it.

Would you mind sharing where you find such deals?

You just gotta monitor the classifieds on the gear forums, preferably at odd hours when not too many people are online.

Here's a good one I snagged a few years ago for $250 shipped:

Ok, it was missing a lot of stuff and took me another $250 to make it perfect. But I flipped it for around $1100 after enjoying it for a while.

A good Gibson through an old Fender amp sounds great. A good Fender through an old Gibson amp sounds amazing. If you haven't tried it, it's worth doing a few times before you die.
