A-10 Warthog; Ugly Enough to be Your Mama
It's been too long since we've had BRRRRRTT

WARNING: NSFW--language

Go Pro video of an Army ODA team in contact with CAS from a Warthog. A-10 first shows up at about 3:40 and the pilot puts rounds right on target at about 6:40

The A-10 is an awesome piece of equipment. It's not the fastest or the highest tech, but it's still really well suited to what it does.

I can remember a talk by an A-10 driver when I was a CAP cadet, as a kid. He said it was his kind of fighter; maneuverable, effective, and single engine. I had to raise my hand, "excuse me, sir, but the A-10 has two engines."

He smiled and corrected me. "No, son, it does not. The A-10 has two half-engines." I never forgot that. Much later his comment made a lot more sense.

I have seen real helmet cam film from when Nate was wounded the first time. Lot better, you get to see the front end of the A10 light up, hear the noise, see the impact areas light up. I'll see if I can find it, and maybe somebody can help me get it online here.

And, yes, it is truly an awesome machine, and we really, really need to keep them in service.

I miss my time in service in that I rode Huey’s, shot and drove some cool, destructive, protective and expensive gear, and at times had all the ammo we wanted to expend. In the field, A-10’s were flying low and slow all day long during the only time we might have gotten a little sleep. What a way to stay awake though.

Nothing but love for the A10s. I've never seen them from the ground in person but worked with them often from the air.

We've got a National Guard training base here. Really cool to see them light up old tanks. And once you've heard them fire you never forget.

Back in the 80's I lived and worked in Louisiana. I frequently drove through Alexandria and was nearly always buzzed by a pair of A-10's out of England AFB coming across the road at treetop level. They were like cropdusters.........BIG, HONKIN', UGLY cropdusters with REALLY BIG GUNS!!!

Beauty is in the eye go the beholder, it is said. The A-10 is beautiful and has been proven to take a licking and still keeps on ticking. She flies like a butterfly and stings like a bee (an African killer bee).

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

“Orders?” They get targeting information in a couple ways. They communicate with a Controller imbedded with ground forces or member of the ground forces trained to direct CAS, and respond to information—the video I posted had those communications in it; you must not have watched.

The aircraft also has a laser targeting device. Ground forces can “paint” a target, guiding the pilot right to the target, or the pilot can himself guide a smart bomb all the way on to target. That wouldn’t be GAU-8

I’d be interested to hear the explanation of your “two half-engines” comment.
