received two text messages on my phone that my wells fargo on line account has been suspended and that I cannot access funds etc. I have a Wells Fargo brokerage account but no banking. Seems like phising to me. Thanks

Call your Wells Fargo banker.
Serious about crackers.

Wrong question. The right question is “Who actually falls for this kind of stuff?”

Lots of people or they wouldn't keep doing it.
Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.
Yes, this is a scam, and a common one. I spot most of them by my not having any accounts with the purported banks in the first place, but some of them do look fairly realistic.

Totally legit, and you'd better hurry... Gotta get your Wells Fargo account unlocked in time for that Nigerian prince to wire you his inheritance.

That one actually had reasonable grammar and spelling. I get a lot from Chase bank with foreign characters that are intended to mimic English characters - that’s kind of a dead giveaway!

Just for anyone that may come into this thread... I've worked for JP Morgan Chase, and am currently working for another large financial institution. I can't think of a circumstance where either would send you a text or an email telling you your account has been deactivated. PERIOD. All will let you fail your login attempts and then force you to make a call. DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS AND LOGIN. EVER

Just make sure to have SSN and PIN available if they need it.

If they tell you to withdraw all the money you can from you checking and/or savings and to deposit into a secure account using a Bitcoin ATM, then it’s totally legit

We joke about this stuff, but… An older lady that I help with PC stuff got into one of these. Thing is, she is pretty sharp and still on top of things mentally even at her, ahem, advanced age. They just caught her on the right day, with the right spiel. She lost $10k out of one of her retirement accounts.

^^^ There's a sucker born every minute. That's life, but that doesn't mean we cannot joke about this stuff.

Yep. They wouldn't keep doing it if it didn't work every now and then.
And with each attempt being so low effort, they can spew them out in the millions quite easily, with the process being almost entirely automated by software.
So even if only 0.0001% of people fall for it, 0.0001% of tens of million of attempts is still several dozen victims that they've successfully drained.
