It's up to 3 days as a general guideline, but on a specific surface may be much shorter. See list above.

At my job we get a UPS shipment in daily. The UPS driver is what concerns me since he's around a lot of people and touches everything. So far we are using nitrile gloves when handling packages and washing hands. Err on the side of caution.

From: New Coronavirus Stable for Hours on Surfaces

quote:
The virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is stable for several hours to days in aerosols and on surfaces, according to a new study from National Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA and Princeton University scientists in The New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists found that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was detectable in aerosols for up to three hours, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel. The results provide key information about the stability of SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19 disease, and suggests that people may acquire the virus through the air and after touching contaminated objects. The study information was widely shared during the past two weeks after the researchers placed the contents on a preprint server to quickly share their data with colleagues.

We leave our packages in the garage for a day or so to reduce the chance that the delivery folks accidentally deliver more than ordered...

I just wish it was as simple as using the flamethrower treatment on bills. Wink

If expecting a package, I used to go out to the driver and accept the package directly from them. Figured it saved them a second or two or a step or two. I don't do that any more. No telling what they've touched or who they've encountered. I now let them bring the package to the door and I have no interaction.

I leave the package at the door long enough for gravity to affect any moisture droplets dispersed from their breath and remaining in my porch area, to fall to earth. My USPS person isn't tall, so doesn't take long Wink

I started this by accident but have continued to do it this way for over a week. 24 hours on paper is what I saw so...

I get yesterdays mail just before todays is due. That way it all gets quarantined almost 24 hours in the mailbox. Junk mail is sorted and trashed in the outside can.

Recent paper reported fomite survival on different surfaces:

aerosols, up to 3 hours post aerosolization

up to 4 hours on copper

up to 24 hours on cardboard

up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel (13hr median half-life on steel; 16hr median half-life on plastic)

definition: fomites...objects or materials which are likely to carry infection, such as clothes, utensils, and furniture.

Mail is deposited into a decontamination air-lock chamber and quarantined for at least 96 hours.

I'm not taking any chances!
