I am suprised it has taken so long. Remember no sexist comments. You know about making sammiches and stuff. These are combat soldiers. Story below:

SCRANTON, Pa. - A Pennsylvania toy manufacturer is using some imagination in the fight for equality. The small operation is one of the only makers of toy plastic Army men, and soon it will be expanding the line to include Army women.

Jeff Imel who owns BMC Toys in Scranton says the classic little green Army men we all know will never go out of style.

"If you lose one, it's not the end of the world. Your mom's not going to kill you," Imel told WNEP.

Since the 1950s, no one's really broken the mold on the beloved toy. BMC is one of the only producers of the toy left in the U.S. Imel says a few hundred thousand soldiers march out of this small factory on Penn Avenue each year.

But starting next year, Imel will start something new. He showed the prototype for the first female combat toy soldier.

Before, women were only shown in a historically accurate fashion. Imel says he's received requests for female figurines for years.

"To do a new set of figures like this, it's about the cost of a modest new car, you know, so I checked the couch cushions, came up empty," he laughed.

Then, he received letters from a retired female Navy sailor and a 6-year-old girl asking for representation that gave him the confidence and proof of concept to draw up some plans.

"When you're talking about modern combat soldiers, they've got a lot of heavy protective gear. You shrink that down to two inches, getting kind of hard to tell gender at that point. And so, I went another route where we kind of expand the pop culture universe of plastic Army men to include women."

Sometimes even the toy industry needs to be reminded to have a little imagination.

"Whether it's a dinosaur, or Davy Crockett, or an Army man, maybe having a set of plastic Army women will help some kid somewhere be the hero of their own story at playtime. And I think that's a good thing for everybody."

BMC Toys' female soldier line should be ready by Christmas 2020.

He has prototypes, is spotlighted on the local news, and he won't have them ready until Christmas 2020? Sheesh.

Will we be allowed to blown them up with firecrackers too, or will different rules apply?

With neices, nephews, friends with kids, and neighbors with kids, I haven't observed a single one that owned or played with this iconic toy in...geez, maybe 15 or 20 years or more. With only %1 of U.S. citizens even serving in the military I'm honestly surprised that the plastic Army soldier is even still made.

I have no idea what kind of demand there is for this toy or what revenue they generate...the cynic in me thinks that perhaps sales are down and this move is one to satisfy the PC gender equality crowd...but if this move helps a company stay afloat or increase revenue, and recognizing the fact that it reflects the reality of women serving in the military, I'm fine with it...as long as that tiny plastic female soldier can perform to their male counterpart PT requirements, carry a full load out pack and all, and meet all the male qualification standards. ...oh, and she gets the Black Cat/ M-80 .177 Cal. and 5.56 mm training evolution too. It is probably marketed to Grandpa who would like to see his grandkids play with this stuff instead of electronics. You know down on the floor with your rubber band guns and your very own sound effects. They really do hurt when you sit on them.

I'm hoping they'll have a woman soldier with big boobs and she's holding a broom or sitting in a general's lap taking notes. Most of all I want one in a mini skirt serving the GI's a refreshing cold beer.

My Navy daughter says with equal opportunity comes equal risk.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

That's Daisy Crockett to all you sexist frontier-persons. It's right there in the history books. Or will be....
