Sick of paying $$$ for the little we get so we're going to cut the satellite out. Of course, the DVR is full of movies recorded over the years, as well as, a bunch of stuff my kids like to watch. I'm reading differing opinions. It appears that I CAN put stuff from the DVR onto an external drive but I may not be able to VIEW it, apart from a Dish DVR. Am I right? Suggestions? | ||

My understanding is exactly that. You need a dish device to watch saved movies. We just recently dumped Dish and lost our recordings. It was worth it. You could try the following to see if it would work, basically it records HDMI (1080p) as MP4 video files to a USB thumb drive. Only issue is cost.
I've used the exact setup to record streaming video. HDMI splitter sits between your box/dvr/media streamer & Cloner Box, then HDMI out of the Cloner Box to the TV.
