I am in need of a trustworthy thermometer designed for BBQ'ing meat. Nothing fancy, just a quick readout of the temperature. Hopefully, under $50.00 or so. Any solid recommendations? Dan

Do you want a simple probe or something you can leave in? I use a Thermapen classic and a Chef alarm when smoking but this is a little cheaper. Anything by Thermapen is pretty much good to go. http://www.thermoworks.com/ThermoPop

Yes, any of the thermometers that Amazing Ribs rates as Gold Medal. Before I learned about AmazingRibs and the ThermoWorks brand, I bought the #1 rated instant read thermometer off Amazon for $21. It lasted 1 grilling season, and was SLOOOOOWWWWW (real easy to miss medium rare and end up with medium steaks). The ThermoWorks ThermaPen has been going strong for years and I'll have had to do is occasionally put in a battery. In other words, it's better and in the long term less money. Everybody needs an instant read thermometer. Myself and many Sigforumites have the ThermoWorks ThermaPen Classic (I have this one) or the newer ThermoWorks ThermaPen MK4. Fastest on market, accurate, and durable. However, the little brother, the ThermoWorks ThermoPop, is only slightly slower and is $29. I have and recommend also having a wireless thermometer that you leave in food for smoking, roasts, etc. I have the Maverick ET-733, but if I were buying today I'd buy the ThermoWorks Smoke as it has slimmer and supposedly more durable probes than the Maverick (I go through at least 1 Maverick probe per year, and being so thick it's not as versatile as thinner probes). I discourage wasting your hard earned money on gimmicky, finicky, short range Blue tooth based thermometers. Thermapop, pen or...if you are willing to spring for the Thermapen, how about the Smoke? http://www.thermoworks.com/Smo...TEIPgWcaAmkDEALw_wcB I have a Thermapen and use it all the time. I got the Smoke for Fathers Day this year, it is the bomb for smoking meat. I also use it for bigger cuts on the grill like tri-tip. “People have to really suffer before they can risk doing what they love.” –Chuck Palahnuik Be harder to kill: https://preparefit.ck.page

The Thermapen costs but it is the best I’ve ever owned. Cry once! I use a Polder for my smoker to leave in the meat, it wasn’t very expensive and has served me well for a lot of bbq’s.

Hahaha so do I. Even my uncle, who claims to never need such mortal tools to BBQ, has raved about how cool his Thermapen is He still blames any mishaps on my aunt however lol

I hated to spend as much as I did for my Thermapen (Classic) but it has improved my cooking more than anything else I have purchased. It is useable for much more than BBQ as you will learn. Since that purchase I now own the Chef Alarm, a Time Stick and just recently got the Smoke. All are worth their price. Thermoworks is my go to for temp and time devices. We just got a Thermapop to compare with our (classic) Thermapen. The Thermapen stabilizes a temp measurement in 2-3 seconds, the Thermapop in 3-5 seconds. The Thermapop is $20 instead of $80-100. The Thermapop lets you read with either hand as you can rotate the screen image, the -pen has to be held in the right hand. If you're serious cook, you should have the Thermapen. A couple of big roasts saved from being overdone will pay for it. _________________________ “ What all the wise men promised has not happened, and what all the damned fools said would happen has come to pass.”— Lord Melbourne

I have classic Thermapen, Thermopop, and the Smoke with WiFi gateway. They are all good. If the budget is tight the Thermopop is a remarkable value. I have a few SIGs.

I have had a Thermoworks Thermopop for a few years, and agree that it's an incredible value @ $20-$25.
