I've been a fan of Cruz for about 2 years now.

If Trump wins the nomination and Cruz runs as his vp I'm in.

That's premature, but for the first time in my life, I might get to vote for something I want, rather then the lesser of two evils.

Here are a few items from that George Will article noted above...
<snip>
The white percentage of the electorate has been shrinking for decades and will be 2 points smaller in 2016 than in 2012. In 2008, Barack Obama became the first president elected while losing the white vote by double digits.

In 2012, Hispanics, the nation's largest minority, were for the first time a double-digit (10%) portion of the electorate. White voters were nearly 90% of Romney's vote. In 1988, George H.W. Bush won 59% of the white vote, translating into 426 electoral votes.

Twenty-four years later, Romney won 59% of the white vote and just 206 electoral votes. He lost the nonwhite vote by 63 points, receiving just 17% of it. If the Republicans' 2016 nominee does not do better than Romney did among nonwhite voters, he will need 65% of the white vote, which was last achieved by Ronald Reagan when carrying 49 states in 1984.
</snip>

Maybe I am wrong, but I think this line of thinking is where Georgey-boy gets it wrong. Romney did not get 59% of the white population vote. What he is missing is that large numbers of (white, conservative) voters are staying home and not voting. They were unimpressed with Romney and McStain. IMO, if you are able to sufficiently energize those voters so you can get them to vote, he can win. Also, something like 95% of the black people WHO VOTED voted for Obama. Unless the Dems put up another black candidate, they will not see those numbers repeat. I don't think 95% of black folk are gonna vote for the eventual Dem nominee.

What's really significant about Will's remarks is that he is trying so very hard- more than 14 months before the election- to convince all of us that Trump should be abandoned.

Keep hammering away at it, George. I like the tone of frustration you have these days. It tells me we're on the right track.

Oh Goody......

I thought that's what I heard him say in that press conference, but I couldn't be sure as I was listening to it in the background as I was doing paperwork. And it sounded almost too good to be true.

They certainly have my attention.

Cruz and Trump held a meeting at Trump Towers about a month ago which is when this plan was hatched I assume.
I also speculated at that time that the only way Trump does not go third party is if Cruz gets the nomination.
Cruz is not polling well at the moment partly due to Trump doing so well.
Makes one wonder if at some point Trump drops out and endorses Cruz which would inflate his numbers considerably but still may not be enough. You never know how many votes an endorsement will translate to.

Trump is doing far better at this point than even he had to anticipate. Which may complicate any plan he had, if any.

Yes, very interesting! I'm not sure where things are going, but the election sure has been entertaining so far, especially this early.

If they help each other.... we all win.
Trump/Cruz!

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

If Trump and Cruz wind up on the same ticket, it will be Trump/Cruz. And I think that is perfect. Wink

People are coming out to see Trump not Cruz. Risky to do bait and switch. What do you see in Cruz that will sustain the energy and zeitgeist of this campaign? Quite simply it won't work.

Trump has lightning in a bottle right now. The question is can he sustain it into the general election. It's this or nothing.

You may be right, of course, we shall see. My perspective, when I posted on p34, was that eventually, either Trump, or the aura surrounding him, would begin to dim, and someone needs to pick up the mantle. Cruz has no where near the enthusiastic support Trump has, but he speaks the truth, stands his ground, and slays his opponents. In other words, he is Trump without the drama. It is true, right now, we need the drama, but that is un-sustainable. When things settle down, who knows if Trump will still want to be a candidate. Think about this: while he is campaigning, he isn't doing business deals and is spending his own money. He has a lot to spare. But, does he really want to put his business dealings on hold for 4 years? Maybe. But, maybe not.

My guess is he's been grooming his kids for years to be able to take over for him at some point. Why not now?

He has very capable children in the family business. The Trump organization will not be putting anything on hold, and he doesn't need to be there to hold their hands.
