Unlike Barry, who can't give a five minute speech without saying "I" 52 times.

The AF probably demands a four engine plane to carry the president, especially over water. I guess they don't believe in ETOPS.

Also, I've heard they think the current VC-25As are too small. They want more room in the new plane, and some new capabilities. There was talk about going with an A380 Eek (for a few reasons.)

Of course Trump will likely want to fly on his plane Razz

And my guess is that this is a call by the Secret Service, not the president.

Democrat Introduces Legislation To Strip Military Power From Trump

Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) made his first step in stripping President-elect Donald Trump of his military power. Because Trump has no foreign policy experience and operates on “unpredictability,” Himes is introducing legislation to ensure only Congress can declare war.

The Democrat from Connecticut introduced the Reclamation of War Powers Act Tuesday morning in attempts to curb the executive branch's power to carry out military actions.
The bill aims to cut funding for military missions not authorized specifically by Congress and would repeal authorizations for military force in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Congress was guaranteed the power to declare war in the Constitution, yet since 9/11 more military authority has been given to the executive branch. With the “erratic” Donald Trump now poised to be president, Himes said it’s in the country’s best interests that he be required to consult with Congress before taking any military action.

In November, Himes used Trump’s Twitter account as justification for his bill.

The bill does not have a prayer in passing this session, according to Circa.

I'm not sure I disagree with this. The Constitution is pretty clear about it. Although a lot of video presentations seem to say that FDR's speech on 8 Dec 1941 said that "a state of war has existed" (implying that he had declared war), in fact he said "I ask the Congress to declare that a state of war has existed", indicating that he recognized that only Congress could declare war.

Why not just upgrade the existing planes?

flashguy

Age and stress on the air frame.....Obummer did do a lot of flying to his various vacations, golf outings, "Telling The World I am Great and America Isn't" tours. Wink

Seriously, at some point it costs almost as much as building a completely new airplane to do the upgrades on the old one.

I agree that Obama abused his Air Force one privilege. However, how come a fifty plus year old airframe is fine for our military? The B-52 is still motoring on after updates. Why can't they update the 747 like the B-52?
Also, the 747 is built here in Washington. Trump got no love from this state. In fact, they're still pissing and moaning about his election in their Emerald sanctuary city.
Boeing also got the in air refueling contract handed to them after it was initially awarded to Airbus in a fair and less than objective (Due to American production and the fact that Obama got a shit load of support from the state.) competition.
Does any body remember Nancy Reagan's purchase of White House china?
D.C. Has to curb it's appetite for our our money. We're not just broke, but 20 trillion in debt. Trump understands the gravity of the situation.

I'm going to speak on the 747 thing as I am somewhat of an expert on them according to the FAA.

1) The current VC-25 is based on the 747-200 airframe. That's a great airplane...for the 1970's and 80's. I'm sure it has been updated to a certain degree, but there is only so much you can do to an aircraft that stopped being produced 26 years ago.

2) The 747-400 increased and improved pretty much every part of the -200. I have not met a single pilot who flew the -200 who preferred it over the -400. Except maybe those who like an engineer running the systems because they are oh so difficult on the automated -400. There's not a lot of PFM (technical term "Pure Fuckin' Magic") on the -400 like the MD-11, but it is a solid plane and so much easier to deal with.

3) The 747-8 (upon which the new AF1 will be based) is a DRAMATIC improvement over the -400. Imagine this in pure economic terms. The -8 can carry 100,000 more pounds of payload and do it burning roughly 20% less fuel. Yes that TWENTY percent. Airlines get the vapors over 2-3% savings, so you can see what kind of improvement this is. The improved avionics allow even Air Force pilots to fly in the shittiest of situations that we freight dogs fly in all the time (sorry guys Wink ).

4) The extended upper deck will allow a huge improvement in the comms capability for the Commander in Chief.

You really have to have operated them on a regular basis, but I can say with the confidence of having flown the -8 for 500+ hours that it really is a solid bird and though I have much love for the 777, the 747 still is the Queen of the Skies. The 787 is also a great plane, but it just doesn't have the ooomph of a 747. Personally, I want the POTUS in the biggest baddest airplane out there that isn't an Airbus, and that's the 747-8.

Yes, let's please go over the seventh grade civics lessons...

...and get them wrong.

Tell me, guys- what other laws would you like passed that restrict President-elect Trump's authority? Now, that's just for Trump, you see, because that's what you "I agree wth what the stupid fucking democrat" guys are endorsing. So, please do tell us more about how you'd like the President-elect obstructed by partisan politics.

Please, do go ahead. We're all listening. It's so very fascinating.

Local news this AM (yea...wife watching the weather again) had a YUUGE story on how the Chicago City Council stripped The Donald of his honorary street sign.

Really?

With all the issues that city has, from out of control gang violence, a murder rate higher than most third world countries, and an economic condition to match...this is what they deem important?

I hope the left keeps it up. It is already beginning to get old and it has only been a month since the election.

The left is in total terminal meltdown. Hopefully, once they reach steaming, stinking puddle state, they will just go away.

Thank you Otto pilot for the post about the 474. Very informative. One cool fact I learned while reading about the current 747 the president flies on is that it's body is hardened to survive a nuclear detonation on the ground while it is flying. Now I don't know what all that entails but I assume it's not something Boeing offers as a standard upgrade to the aircraft. The inner geek in me would love to roll around in the comm suite of that aircraft as well. Black boxes everywhere!
