Eloquently stated. The idea that we can “Democratize” a society is simply wrong; as has been proven throughout the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and anywhere else we’ve attempted it. That specific “society” has to choose, implement and defend Democracy itself, otherwise democracy will fail. It’s parallel to the Truman Doctrine of stopping communism - also by military presence. What has been shown to be effective, rather the military arm, is the economic arm. That should've been the program from the outset. There was nothing else we could've done that made their situation any worse than where they already were. The jointness-jihadists insisted on getting everybody into the fray and the political hacks all wanted 'humanitarian efforts' placating both the policy doves and the Pashtuns; never mind the Northern Alliance was doing all the heavy lifting. The vast majority of GOFO (General/Flag Officers) merely used Afghanistan as a ticket-punching exercise. When a USAF general is dictating strategic ground activity...there's bound to be problems. | |||
