Tax Year 2023 - TurboTax or H&R Block Login/Join

I have used TurboTax for decades; however, I am reading some bad reviews plus the requirement to have an Intuit account. Some reviews on Amazon say Intuit wants name, phone and SSN. One reviewer even posted "It uses this to go to public sources to make sure it's you. If the credit bureau info is wrong, good luck trying to use the software".

I am seriously thinking of migrating to H&R Block. Any thoughts on TurboTax vs. H&R Block? Has anyone migrated and had any issues importing TurboTax data into the H&R Block software?

I too used TT for years but was getting tired of the price increases and the nickel-and-diming, I switched to H&R Block Online last year and it was fine. The interface isn't as polished as TT and there's not 300 bells and whistles but who cares, it's taxes.

A few years ago, Block broke the printing of fileable forms, so if you file on paper by mail, it is no longer an option. This is on macOS. This was their Premium, Self-employed/Rental product.

I believe that this breakage was intentional so as to encourage electronic filing. Block support refuses to acknowledge the problem.

I used Block until last year when I gave up dealing with the hassle of printing a non-fileable version of the return, and transferring entries to forms by hand, and went over to Turbo. The Block interview, and mechanism for correcting entries, and running alternatives seems to me to be superior, but the products are very similar overall.

Turbo didn't exactly treat me right either, failing to print a necessary supporting form, which the IRS caught and penalized me for. However, I will be using Turbo for tax year 2023.

I used TT. Then they pissed me off and I switched to Block. Eventually they pissed me off and I’ve been using TT since. So far, TT hasn’t pissed me off enough to switch back to block. At that point, I may just switch to a cpa. I’m getting tired of doing taxes.

Interesting...on Amazon it states "Five free federal e-files and unlimited federal preparation and printing".

Confused

I've used TT for many years. Last year was the first year I had serious problems. TT flat refused to print a copy for my records, ended up transcribing a hardcopy by hand. Good luck getting support from TT. They suck. From what I hear, just about all of them suck. For the record, it was TT Deluxe, the one that included the state. BTW, the state printed fine.

I used TT for years. About 6-8 years ago, following an audit, they cost me about $10K plus penalties and attorney fees. Their program said that I could deduct something that I couldn't. I jumped to HRB after that and have, so far, been happy. The same thing may happen again with HRB though, so who knows? If the IRS wants you, they're going to get you if you spend $38 on your software or tens of thousands on CPAs and tax attorneys. Makes no difference. And now there's 80,000 more of them to comb through your shit. Mad

My taxes are fairly uncomplicated so I've been using H&R Block since 2020 tax year.

No issues printing and I definitely know this since I mail my returns.

I've used both H&R Block and TT over the years, and never had a problem with either. At the end of the process they produced a PDF file so I could print that if necessary, but I've been e-filing for 10 or so years now. Last year was exceptional, including an inter-state move (so two state returns to do), retiring, starting to draw from my 401K, etc., so I went to the local H&R Block office and had them do it. This year I'll go back to doing it online.

The live H&R Block screwed up one of my forms one year.

They refunded me for just that form, not the whole return.

They said that was a complicated form.

I paid a real accountant to fix it.

Your results are only as good as the preparer you get.

I have never gone back.

TurboTax.

Of course they know your info. You are keying it in the returns. The government knows your info. It is all as secure as the internet can make it.

Never had an issue with TurboTax.

Turbo tax messed up our state forms, have been a hassle to send forms, and play games with costs. We shifted to freetaxusa.com a few years ago and find them much better.

Agreed, TT is solid and I've never had issues in probably 15-20 years.

I am curious about the people who are still filing a paper return and what is motivating that. Is there some expectation that this gives more security for a return that is getting scanned by a contractor and stored online the moment it's opened? And no concerns about confirmation of receipt? I've fought for weeks in prior life even with a Certified Mail Return Receipt over whether the return was ACTUALLY in the envelope received.... ultimately had to send again, which trigger late filing chain of events.

I've got a BIL who does this, but closest thing to a computer he has is his flip phone. He is an active investor and has a family farm so his return is far from simple, but he's dragging all those forms around. I don't even know where he gets the forms these days, I'm pretty sure the stack at USPS doesn't include a Schedule F and Form 4562.....

FYI, for those who use H&R Block.

Newegg currently has H&R Block 2023 Deluxe + State Software (Download) for $20 after using the promo code (shown on the screen).

Go to a CPA. A good one will make sure you get everything you can back. TurboTax screwed me for the last time a few years back. Plus, every time I use that program, I can do my taxes, two or three different ways, and get a different number each time. Go to a professional.

Turbo Tax or any other tax return program is just like using AI as in you still have to understand the overall principles just to ensure the program doesn't give you the wrong answer. I guess I have the advantage of having to do my own taxes manually before there were any software available. I used to go to the post office and pick up all the tax forms and instructions that were available.

I've been using TurboTax ever since Parsons Technology was no more. I download the desktop file from Amazon. I save the installation file in the same directory as my tax files for that year.

Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." H&R for many years now.
Have used TT in the past, no problems with that ether.
Just use the same (software -current year) year after year for consistency and pulling in past amounts.
