Assuming you are located in N. America, it is not a venomous snake. The only NA venomous snake with a body shaped like that is a coral snake, but its coloration is very distinctive.

A close up of the head and a geographical location would be helpful for ID.

Assuming you are in Georgia, this site should prove very useful: Savanna River Ecology Laboratory

That is a Northern Brown Snake if it's only about a foot long.
Harmless. Relative of the rat snake.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

“I don't like the shape of its head”

He’s probably not wild about the shape of your head, either.

Or the size, I suspect. That little guy would have a difficult time choking most of us down.

It doesn’t look poisonous to me, but it is hard to tell exactly what snake it is. I was thinking it might be a type of water snake.

I'm going to go with Dekay's Brownsnake. Harmless. The wife finds them while weeding and just tosses them to the side with the weeds.
