In my first job in tv news a thousand years ago, the news director instructed us how to shoot interviews. When shooting cutaways -- used to cover edits in the piece -- the reporter was to just sit there. No nodding as that could be taken as agreeing with the interviewee. How quaint, huh?
Along those lines, I added my own spin. I would regularly film (yes, film) press conferences. A bunch of cameras on a riser behind and above the seated reporters. I would always set up at one end or the other, minimizing the subject at the mike's chance to address my camera and the viewers directly.
As a side note, if the press conference subject wasn't the right denomination and he had a "useful" facial expression, the sound of still camera motor drives firing was comical/horrifying.
