Vandal’s destroyed/stole one of my favorite sculptures!
People really piss me off anymore. The vast majority of my Sundays after church with friends in High School were spent at Eden Park in Cincinnati. Arguably one of the most beautiful places in Cincinnati. You’ve got River over looks, multiple ponds, fountains, a great little live theater, and the Krohn Conservatory a wonderful place to go no matter the weather.
But one of my favorite things is a sculpture of Romulus and Remus being fed by the Wolf it was a gift to Cincinnati by the City of Rome in 1931.
Vandals hacked the wolf off at the paws and took it!!!

Eden Park wolf statue, gifted to city by Mussolini's Rome, stolen

A 90-year-old statue in Eden Park, which sparked controversy in 2020, has been stolen, police said Friday.

The Capitoline Wolf or “Lupa Romana" was a gift from the city of Rome to Cincinnati in 1931, a gift that was approved by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who ruled the country at the time.

The bronze statue depicts the mythical origin story of Rome. The city's founders, Romulus and Remus, are seen nursing from a wolf. Cincinnati's statue is a replica of an ancient version in a Roman museum.

On Friday, the infants Romulus and Remus remain, but the she-wolf has been cut off at the ankles and taken.

A memo from the Cincinnati Parks administration said the theft occurred sometime Thursday night.

"As you know, we often deal with vandalism, litter and dumping issues in our parks, however given the historical nature of this piece, this is beyond disappointing," the memo said.

The parks department said it is working with Cincinnati police to recover the statue and also working to assess the value of the piece.

Parks officials are asking any park users who may have witnessed suspicious activity to call police at 513-352-3040.

City councilman Jeff Cramerding has drafted a motion for the city to offer a $50,000 reward for the return of the statue. City council could consider the motion next week.

According to Cramerding's office, police believe the statue was taken by scrappers who intend to sell the metal.

In 2020, then-city councilman Chris Seelbach said the statue should no longer be displayed in Eden Park, and instead possibly be moved to a museum, due to its ties to the dictator. However, he pivoted from his efforts after hearing from the community.

"Cincinnati has found the power to redefine this sculpture to no longer reflect the actions of the man who gave it to us," Seelbach said.

Cincinnati police say an investigation is underway.

Not vandalism. Theft. Stolen for scrap value of bronze. Romulus and Remus now look like they are saying: "WTF"?

That is horrible. The rhetorical question asked way to often these days. "What the hell is wrong with people."

Sadly, I would not be surprised if some douche magoos did it because it was a gift from during the time of Mussolini.

There was a douche magoo of a councilman a few years back boo hooing about it.

Scrap it to sell they would have to travel pretty far to get rid of it. It’s pretty well known around there.

The original of that statue is in a museum in Rome, Italy. There is a similar statue in Sienna, Italy, near the cathedral.

I've delivered to every scrapyard in the Cincinnati area.
I can't see any of them paying for it for scrap. Maybe.
Police visit them frequently. People suck!

People suck. I hope they find them, prosecute them heavily, and restore the historical statue to its original condition.

(however, that is one ugly ass statue)

It has been many many years since I was there
( I relocated from Columbus OH just after 9/11 and it was before that)

I despise people
I am starting to think it is a good thing that Police Depts are not calling me.

In the last week couple of weeks there was a theft of a Native American Sculpture in Oklahoma.

You might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

Scavengers most likely. Is it time to regulate or, put under surveillance scrap yards, smelters and recyclers?

The scrap places around here seem to be regulated. My small business generates a fair amount of scrap metal, and I make the occasional trip to the scrap metal business to get a few bucks for it. Recently, they have asked for identification before buying the stuff.

That's effed up.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
