I am going to a high school reunion in San Diego late September, early October. I have already booked a flight, and am in need of a couple nights stay in San Diego.

Looking at hotel rates, they are out of control. At the suggestion of a member here, I have been looking at VRBO. There are some decent places and rates, but I wanted to ask the forum if there is something else I should look at?

I will be flying in the afternoon of 9/30, reunion is the evening of 10/1, and then fly back to CO the morning of 10/2. So, just looking for a 2 night stay. The reunion is downtown at the Doubletree, so will probably be staying around that area.

Thanks.

Mike

(a) use Expedia
(b) many hotels listed there are less than $150
(c) Look at Sea World and Hotel Circle areas for lower rates

We like the Marriott Bonvoy at Liberty Station. Very close to downtown without all the hassle.
Was there in January and paid just under $200 a night.

We use our Disney Vacation club points to stay at the Hotel Del. When I have to pay, we stay at Glorietta Bay Inn, or in a pinch, La Aveneda. Both of those are fantastic places and much better than airbnb in my opinion. Glorietta bay has rooms with kitchens which is nice

Sea World SUCKS!!! Lived here moat all of my 60 years and what it has become now is something of an embarrassment. Do the zoo. Wink

House next door is an Air BnB. See people there all the time (typically families). Some are there just for the night, some for a week or two. Wife and I stayed there when we had the house tented.

Very quiet area and the a-hole next door will complain if the noise is unreasonable or late (after 10:00 pm. Big Grin (We had a couple Marines deploying and they had a party of themselves and a couple girl folks. That turned into a party of 20 with someone drunkingly serenading a gal at 0400. It was good cause to fire up my 35 gal air compressor between the homes at 0745 - with the bleeder valve 'accidentally" left open.)

Otherwise, many of te other ideas thrown out here are pretty good too. You just need to know what you want first then look for it.

AirBnB or one of the travel sites that run discounts on hotels. Or the trolley runs from the border so you could stay in TJ.

VRBO is another place to look. We rent our Lakehouse out through them and it has worked out very well.

Thanks all!

I checked out Airbnb, Expedia, and VRBO. I ended up using VRBO, and found a nice apartment for the days I will be there, for a little over $100 a night. Decent location, should have time for a USS Midway trip. Smile

Since you've already picked a place I hope you don't mind me going on a little rant. I used to really like using VRBO and AirBNB. It used to be you'd actually get a property that felt like a home. Nowadays it seems like every property is filled with the cheapest laminate flooring and sparsely furnished with cheap IKEA crap with the attempt to pass the property off as "modern".

It's still cheaper in many cases if you've got a family, but its not like it used to be. And that makes me sad.

Don't mind at all Skull Leader.

I don't vacation much at all. When bounty hunting, I used to stay at whatever hotel in town was the cheapest. Seems with all the covid happenings, that now hotels feel they need to up their prices.

This whole vacation rental thing is new to me. I am hoping the experience is worth the price drop. Really, all I need is a bed to sleep in at night, and some coffee in the morning. I will find out in a month or so.
