I am not sure what a "common date American coin is" Are they collectable coins and you are looking to sell them as such, or are you looking so sell just for the silver value? My mom just gave me a box with old coins, 1940’s dimes mostly. I think she bought them in the 70’s. I ran a few through Google & eBay, not much gain on the ones I searched. She had the price paid & everything in the box. An S&P Index fund would have done much better.

I have finished looking at about half of the coins, evaluating for significant dates with collector value. There are a number of extra fine Kennedy halves, first year of issue that I will likely sell individually, as well as a very few others with collector value. The greater number are melt value only. Just an FYI - most Dealers are not paying a premium for 40/90% silver coins right now. You'll get silver spot minus 10-15% unless you have some mint condition rarities. Your coins may still have value - but you might be better off waiting a few more months to see if the pricing swings stabilize and settle.
