Is this a good price for a 300# pig?
With all of the meat processing plants , ( chicken , pork, beef)
There is a farmer that is offering 300 pigs up for $50.00 a head , if you come get them .

well, he was Sunday anyway.

A dozen of the family owned butcher shops are
backed up to september for butchering said pigs.

all this according to a radio news story I heard in the car.

with The packing plants closed up , they can't take the pigs that the farmers have, that are ready to go to market.

So it's either sell'em or "put'em down .

Look around for a mobile butcher service and check price and availability. Depending on the butcher fee, the farmer's price per head seems pretty fair. And you could always share the hog with a fried or family member to cut the cost in half.

This is only one of the reasons Dennis' next home will be away from the city and on several acres of land, with reasonable neighbors.

Any deer processing outfits in the area? May be worth checking to see if they would butcher a hog.

$50 is the going price for a weiner pig. A butcher hog for $50 is a steal. I bet the farmer would let you butcher it at the farm, grab a meat saw and a book, watch a couple of you tube videos and go have at it.

In normal times it's worth over $1,000. I guess the farmers don't want to pay for feed for several months until the processing plants open back up.

I helped process six, 125# wild hogs we trapped several years ago. We had some good eating out of it. Are you going to process it yourself?

I have a few SIGs.

Yep. Buying two hogs and a new freezer, and you are paying yourself.

I've done enough deer that I wouldn't hesitate to have my way with a pig at that price. Absolute worst case I'd be grinding and making a pile of sausage.

Sounds like a great deal.
As others have said, it's all about getting it butchered and put into freezer wrap. If you know anyone who processes their own deer regularly, they would probably be willing to try butchering a pig.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Too warm to kill a hog here, this time of year. But $50 is a deal.

At that price grab a few and a new freezer.

50 bucks for a butchering hog is a steal. The guy I bought my house from asked if he could leave the 60s vintage chest freezer in the basement when he moved. I couldn't say yes fast enough. It's large enough to for two grown men to climb into. He said he had never unplugged it. The thing is porcelain over steel on the outside, pink plastic on the inside.

For $50, I'd go buy a chest freezer along with the hog. I prefer a chest freezer. I had a friend who was away on vacation and his vertical freezer conked out. Everthing thawed and all the blood, fish guts etc. leaked out onto his floor. A terrible mess for sure. I've butchered a few in my day. Here is a video with a good breakdown on how to do it with simple facilities. This is pretty much how we did it.

A. No where to store it. B. It would take us 2 years to eat that much. C. Am not putting it in the Le Saber Smile

You obviously haven't tried to buy a new freezer. Big Grin

I have done both deer and pigs, not to mention elk, wild boar in Germany. No difference between butchering a pig or a deer. Same principles apply!

And buying a pig at that price would be worth buying one of those 6 or 8 cubic feet freezers!

if you can, do it. I have an agreement with a local farmer for a 300-350 lb hog to be delivered to the processor this fall for $175.
