A loaded or non loaded Shillelagh is also hard to beat. I have a club and we just got my father a walking stick from Olde Shillegah in Ireland. You can't get more authentic and they have great CS.

Just be careful as some of those are loaded with lead and can get you for PC 12020 (16).

Obviously you'd have to check the various states you'll be traveling through but, out here in CA we can carry a concealed tomahawk. Yup, no law against it at all...even in counties which limt pocket knives to 3" blades

Will you be camping? You'll need a tomahawk camp ax and/or a bludgeon/edged melee weapon shovel.

I believe some firearms are OK even in anti-gun states. A pump shotgun or possibly handgun-caliber carbine (not over a 10-round magazine), if kept unloaded with the ammo separated while actually driving, shouldn't get you in trouble. Even in anti-gun California, it is legal (the last I knew, which was 2003 when I left) to defend your campsite (or hotel room) with a firearm.

Real hard to go wrong with a six cell D Maglite. You want the batteries in it, of course, not just because it’s a very usable light with a modern LED in it, but those big ‘ol honkin’ batteries are heavy. Forget a lead-loaded cane and all that, nobody is going to look sideways at you for keeping a big flashlight in your car.

I keep a 4-C Maglite and a 1960's vintage W. German folding shovel in my vehicle.

Yea. I figured a loaded one would not be approved. But baseball gear, no problem.

I’d have to lean ‘baseball’ gear, or the smaller shovel, I like the ‘truckers friend’ too.

Don’t know how bear spray is looked upon in the different States.

I think the big money is made with high S.A., with attention to where & time of day. I don’t mind a dumpy hotel in rural NE, but not in an urban area. With the family likely vetoed anyway.

A hammer is hard to beat. Throw it into a small tool bag with pliers and a couple screwdrivers and it should not run afoul of any state’s weapon laws.

There is a metal detector for screening. Basically-it's like going thru airport security.
You can travel with a handgun--locked, either glove box or trunk. NY,NJ,Mass and CT have high cap mag limits of 10 rounds.

When I go bear hunting in Maine, I typically bring my revolver as a back up.

For your consideration, the Lenwood Blunt Force Trauma Belt.

“Look Good - Break Faces”

I do not have one but it appears that this is a pretty sturdy, well built and a formidable defensive tool.

There are demonstration video’s shown on the website above as well.

Here is a video (yootoob) from 2AGuysAndGear abusing the shit out of the belt on a cinderblock, a brick and a metal compressed gas canister.

I would not want to catch this belt buckle swung upside my head or anywhere else.

Finally a Logical and Sensible answer. My family has been gathering in Lake George NY since 1966 and most of us enjoy an outing of Sporting Clays or 5 Stand. So, before I decided to take my Beretta shotguns I made a call to the NYSP. A very pleasant Sergent (female with a lovely voice) let me know that shotguns are perfectly legal in New York and registration is not required. I was also assured that taking 500 rounds of 12 gage target loads would not be a problem.

Now I could be wrong about this but I consider New York to be the worst state on the east coast for Gun Freedom and it seems if New York considers Shotguns as benign then all of the other East Coast Anti's have the same view.

I've stopped counting.

A good sturdy wooden cane can be a good defensive or offensive weapon & I doubt anyone would think twice about anyone carrying one.

For years I've carried an old pick handle in my pickup, because one never knows when one might run across a pick that needs new a handle.

My understanding is that New Jersey and New York City prohibit any and all firearms without a license/permit/whatever.

If you are traveling through without stopping, you are covered by FOPA, but there are a lot of stories of NYC and NJ cops arresting travelers regardless and making them argue FOPA in court.

Not sure that is legal is many places. A shovel, on the other hand. Who could complain? I live in an area that riots are a nightly occurrence and pulling a gun on "peaceful rioters" can get you arrested and convicted. Cold Steels Spetsnaz Shovel is modeled after an original Soviet Spetsnaz military entrenching tool. This durable and effective shovel has a stout hardwood handle, a broad flat steel blade and 3 sharp edges. A popular tool with military and special operations units worldwide, weve heard tell of it being used to dig foxholes and bunkers, to chop branches, build shelters, act as an improvised paddle, and even as a last-resort weapon of defense! Our Spetsnaz Shovel is also immensely popular with the throwing community, as its head-heavy balance and multiple sharp edges make it an excellent alternative to a Tomahawk for sport and recreational throwing!

Or perhaps a military surplus entrenching tool. That folding shovel type. Makes a dandy multi-purpose tool.

You seem to believe something that just isn’t true. Ask any cop issued an expandable baton. They are worthless.

I’ve used the ASP baton on several occasions during my career. When it comes to hitting people with it they suck. The way you are trained with them is to strike with the last 3-6 inches of the baton, on muscled part of the body, (calf, thigh,) and to avoid hard bony areas like the arms, wrist elbows etc.

With the departments UOF guidelines, you have to strike, then assess, then if the strike doesn’t work, you can try it again....frankly they don’t have enough weight to impart damage to a body unless you strike a joint.

I have broken and bent two of them fighting with drunk people. Not real assuring when it folds after the first swing. And then I had to go to hand on fighting.

After that I only carried it because I was required to do so. It never left my belt again.

we were allowed to use our stream light flashlight as an impact tool (if it was already in your hand) think a four cell mag light....I always carried mine- day or night whenever I got out of my car. And I used it several times an an impact weapon. And it works due to the weight.

They will cause damage if you strike people in the joints-but that will lead to lifelong injuries and can fall under deadly force/serious bodily injury. But cops are trained not to use them on joints for just that reason.

OLd rugged cross, send me an email with your address and I will send you the asp baton I still have, it’s in my closet collecting dust since I retired. It’s yours. But please don’t put any faith in its ability to stop a fight or think that it’s some kind of magic wand.

California is stupid.

A leaded cane or shillelagh is a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the circs or if the cop is having a bad day.

Collapsible batons are a no-no as well. See 22810 PC.

https://leginfo.legislature.ca...m=22210.&lawCode=PEN

A good hammer is totally legal, as is a bat if it’s normal sized.

12020 PC got broken up into a couple dozen sections regarding weapons a few years ago, many of which are exceedingly vague and open to interpretation by cops, DA’s and normal folks.
