AI powered cyberattacks are deeply concerning by themselves, but it is the harbinger of something far worse: a moment called “Q Day.” Q Day is when AI-powered quantum computing becomes capable of breaking the public-key encryption protecting virtually every trusted computer network on earth.

Hostile govts already have geeks working around the clock to hack into our cybersecurity. Our financial institutions, for example, implement safeguards, but do so on a budget and are often behind the curve.

Banks would be especially vulnerable, I would think.

What does SF think of the potential threat?

Step 1: Ensure every single thing humans rely on require electricity and computing.

Step 2: Design and build the ability to destroy all things electrical and which compute.

Step 3: Act surprised when you lose electricity and computers.

What could go wrong?

I have a friend who is fairly high up in the cyber security world, not as a IT guy but more of a sales guy.

Over dinner last night he told me he recently took a course on the effect of Quantum computing in the near future on the security world and he said the power of quantum computing is so many orders of magnitude greater than what is widely used today that nothing will be safe in the near future unless we find a way to protect our data … but no one knows how as of now…

I've been in tech for 35 years now.

AI on quantum hardware will have a gulf between it and us, the same as we have a gulf between us and an ant. I don't give a damn what anyone thinks, we will exist at it's mercy. if you think "we can stop it" you're a fool. Our only hope, as that is the inevitable situation is that the AI likes us, or Jesus comes back and it's moot.

There is no 3rd option, I've spent over 20 years thinking about this very thing when MIT did this I knew the race was on.

Q-day keeps getting closer as Quantum computing advances.

The latest prediction is 2029 or 2030.

The short-term answer may be to return to life as it was in 1990.
