First "smart gun" actually hits market

So-called smart guns are often heralded as the future of firearms. The media talks about them in glowing terms, all about how technology can prevent these guns from being used by unauthorized people such as kids or gun thieves.

However, much of that talk has been nothing but talk.

Every “smart gun” we’ve seen has fallen short and never made it to market. At least, not until now.

Here is a closer look:

It is interesting but I wouldn't buy one.

Smart is a dramatically negligent misnomer. Ain’t nothing smart about it.

Yeah, just try to fit that in your holster. Roll Eyes

The technology is crap and I wouldn't depend on it to save my life or that of my loved ones. Another "smart gun" that is entirely useless by simply following the rules of gun ownership and effective judication of existing criminal laws.

How many happy stories where 'kid defends house and shoots intruders' (and other stories where an unintended good person saves the day with a 3rd party owned weapon) will now have a different ending?

They should have taken a lesson from Armatix and fucked right off with that shit. My local gun store was the first one to advertise it for sale and everyone, and I mean everyone told them how badly this would screw over gun owners in CA. Instant retaliation by the gun community- all Armatix guns were pulled from the shelves the next day. Hope this same thing happens here.

You know what's coming after this, right? Although probably known, I don't even want to post it lest it give more fodder to the idiots in charge.

What, pray tell, will my home state of CA do with this info.

Foremost, this gun isn't on the roster of approved firearms for sale so I guess a "safer" gun won't be coming here anytime soon. Also, even thought it's up on appeal with stay orders, this smart gun doesn't have requisite CA required features such as microstamping of the serial number on cartridge cases.

I guess we won't be as safe as can be.

Well, to be fair, this junk really isn’t about safety. It’s about disarmament.

Here’s a thought; let the police be hobbled by this technology for, say, a minimum of 10 years. Once it has a 100% safety record in all categories then release it for voluntary public consumption. I won’t be touching one in any case.

Unless I missed it, there wasn't any referencing how rugged the electronics are, if, say, the weapon was dropped onto a concrete floor.

And to 229DAK's post, nothing on how the battery is charged.

It will be fun to see how somebody figures out how to hack it.

Just love to talk to the owners of that company and ask why? Why would you do that, knowing the repercussions, are you THAT greedy? New laws will sure as hell be written. Fuck them,, I hope they're bankrupt soonest.

I would add / modify - let the secret service, body guard services (public and private - anything the politicians would use), politicians, FBI, ATF be mandated to use these first. Not our boys and girls in blue.
