House we looked at today had a lot of good to it.
5 wooded acres with a 1200sq ft shop.

2 things I needs are new windows & both bathrooms remodeled/updated.

Curious if anyone can ballpark costs.

House currently has single pane windows, probably need custom sizes as they're narrow & tall.
About 20 windows & only 4 or 5 of average size.

Bathrooms are dated. Sinks molded into the countertop, 80s style seashell sinks.
Both bathrooms could use new counters, sinks, tub/shower enclosure & toilets.

Well, all I can tell is that the most recent quote I got for six windows in a 1,000 sq.ft. condo was $12,000. Six freaking windows. Twelve g's.

The faq on the HD website averages 800-1400 per window, doesn't indicate if that includes labor.

Needing to sink 20k, on just windows, into the house may take it out of consideration

Professionally installed windows can run anywhere from $850 to north of $2,000 each, installed - depending on if you want vinyl/wood/fiberglass, size, and if you do inserts or full frame tear-outs with all new trim, etc. If you're handy, you should be able to buy/install basic inserts for about $400 ea, and pay someone about $100-$200/opening to aluminum wrap the exterior trim/sill. More info needed for a better answer. My crews installed over 2k windows last year, so I can get much more specific if you can give me more details. Feel free to email me.

Just had 4 high grade windows replaced due to hail damage which my insurance covered.
Pella: 2 bedroom casement, 1 bathroom, and one kitchen. Installed they ran a hair over $15.8k. Yup. Yikes is right!
Also took 4 months from order to delivery and installation (June to October 2021).

From what I'm hearing lead time and prices are crazy for the big three: Pella, Anderson, and Marvin.

Just an anecdote:

Was at a local company that does lots of kitchens and windows, we were finalizing our cabinet and countertop order for our new kitchen and I expressed concern that all this inflation was going to change the price on us before we got the order in. The kitchen designer told us that she’s seen a few price increases in the past year but it was the window guys that were having a hell of a time and they were only able to honor quotes for 1 week due to regular price increases in windows.

My house has 28 ancient single pane Anderson wood windows that need replacing bad and my plan is to start that process in 1-2 more years. I’m really hoping all this craziness will have died down by then.

I just locked in a quote for $24,500 for 33 windows, all of them pretty largish. Simonton Daylight Max. Lifetime warranty on the install from the installer. "Double Lifetime" warranty on the windows from the manufacturer (in other words, transferable to the next owner of the house for their lifetime), including labor to replace failed windows (and includes accidental glass breakage). These are vinyl retrofit, where they just drop the insert into the window framing without disturbing the the walls.

I also got a quote from Renewal by Anderson for $124,000 for 40 something windows. Fiberglass, but also drop in retrofit.

I got a third quote that was closer to $900 a window (Anlin windows).

There's a 10 to 12 week lead time now for orders. 12-16 from my Anlin and Anderson quotes.

You may need all the windows replaced, if not I go ‘as needed’ with them. It’s another item where costs vary widely, besides the window differences themselves, quality of the the install is paramount.

Our windows started as decent quality 27 years ago. Any under a protected overhang are doing fine the worst was a west facing window with slight seepage, replaced 5 or so years ago. There are two more coming up for attention.

No idea about your market, but I’m at around $800 ea. for top quality custom windows and around $10K+ for bathroom tear down and remodels, largely depending on grade of materials & fixtures.

I have wholesale accounts set up with local building suppliers, and replaced about 35 windows in my home last year. We decided to go with completely optioned out vinyl windows.

My neighbor is remodeling his house as well, and came to me a couple of weeks ago to order the same windows I put in mine. The prices have certainly increased.

My current cost on a gold label 60"x36" double hung, triple pane, insulated frame, flexscreen, etc. is around $450.

Get specifics from your contractor as far as how they intend to replace the windows. Some will rely on the installation of your existing window to accommodate the replacement. If errors were made originally or other failures exist, they may persist with the new window installed.

Tough to get specifics, as it's a house we're considering putting in an offer.

Would have to try to go back & take measurements & photos, then hope someone else doesn't scoop it up while we figure out costs.

My parents are having windows replaced in their new to them house. I think there are 16 windows, some small and some very large. Double panes, installed is 15,000.

My dad used to be a carpenter and we replaced the windows in their old house about 15 years ago ourselves but I don’t have the time these days and he’s not up to it physically. I want to say there were 11 windows we replaced and the cost was maybe 2000.

We have been taking it a room or window at a time. At these costs they may get plastic stapled over them for the winter. I've got four more to go and after $850 two years ago for 1 - one - window, it's no longer a major priority. Most are done now anyway.

Its like selling your good condition V8 powered truck and accepting payments all over again for a 4 or 6 cylinder that gets a few miles more - fuel is still cheaper than the payments. It's why we have a wood stove, too . . .

They can make a difference, yes, we replaced two back patio doors which were aluminum era double pane, they would sweat and freeze shut in the winter. Fire trap at that point. They were replaced with vinyl double pane e glass and the temp next to them went up 10 degrees.

In our current market, spending $25k to put in modern windows could be more easily offset by choosing a more modern home with a reduction in expectations about other features, size, etc. We've got this home to flat line the electric costs over the last 20 years, upgrading is the way to do it, but in this market with inflation and huge increases in building supply costs, it may take a more moderate approach to keep expenses down. This housing bubble is going to level off as the few people moving finally reach saturation - the future market won't accept appreciation at these levels. It may take 25-30 years to recoup pricing as we approach another major recession.

As an aside, I chose ‘Infinity’ windows by Marvin after looking around. The install & window has been great.

We were South of Atlanta years ago with cheap single pane windows, camp quality. I submit, there are plenty of good options, the install can make the difference.

For good quality windows - insulated glass, vinyl over wood framing you could expect to pay between $142 and $150 per SF.

Of course you can always pay less.

As for bathrooms, it’s hard to gauge a cost - countertops for the vanities can run from cheap plastic laminate to quartz, so it can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. I am going to rebuilding and expanding the en-suite at my place and I am putting aside about $25k to do it.

Windows worth buying are going to be stupid expensive. Our off the shelf low grade stuff has nearly doubled in the last 4 months. Double hung insulated on the cheap end, best case scenario you’re looking at $250 before installation. Bathroom remodel...that’s a huge set of variables.

I can't help with the windows but right now we are in the middle of a complete remodel of both our bathrooms. That includes a complete tear out of everything and building a small stub wall for the glass doors. We are using Delta fixtures throughout. You can find cheaper fixtures but it will cost you in the long run and you contractor will not be happy. Walk in shower with sub way tile on the walls and glass doors surrounding it. New vanities, new floor and new paint for each bathroom.

We are going to have pretty close to 25 grand into the total. The big problem is finding a contractor that can do it all...tile work, plumbing and carpentry and even some electrical. We got lucky and have a great contractor with two workers and everyone actually knows what they are doing.

Another big problem is these guys are booked months in advance and getting your materials can take months as well. For example, our vanities took two months to get and that was actually pretty good. It will take the glass people two weeks just to come out and get the final measurements and then another few weeks to get the glass and install it. We started this project on paper back in November and we are just now getting to work on it.

I am remodeling a house built in 1920.

Mathews Brother windows are costing me about $230 to $260 depending on size. The framer is charging $500 a window to reframe and retrim the outside.

Trimming the inside is extra.

6x9 bathroom is going to cost me around $25K with new copper piping, new vent stack new fixtures all Moen. Had to level the floor, insulate, all new PVC drains. Tile and glass shower. Had to reframe the window and using Hardie Board to reshingle the dormer, new sub panel, new lights.
