West Midlands Police has classified an upcoming Aston Villa FC soccer game in Birmingham, England, as “high risk” following a “thorough assessment” of public safety concerns. The decision bans fans of Villa’s opponent, Maccabi Tel Aviv—a predominantly Jewish demographic—from attending the match to mitigate risks to public safety. According to the West Midlands Police, the decision was made after considering current intelligence and previous incidents of violence and hate crimes, as well as threats from local Muslims.

A spokesman for the police stated, “This decision is based on current intelligence and previous incidents, including violent clashes and hate crime offences that occurred during the 2024 Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam.” The November 2024 match in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, saw violence break out, leading to arrests. Amsterdam officials described the events as a “toxic combination of antisemitism, hooliganism, and anger” over the war in Gaza and other Middle Eastern conflicts.

Birmingham City Council issued a safety certificate for the upcoming game, but West Midlands Police has voiced its support for prohibiting away supporters from attending. “Based on our professional judgement, we believe this measure will help mitigate risks to public safety,” the spokesman added.

Protests over the war in Gaza have occurred at various sporting events, including during Israel’s national team matches in recent World Cup qualifiers.

One more reason not to follow soccer! This decision is outrageous, letting threat-makers intimidate LE over a sports match? Perhaps if they were to round them up, and lock them up in gaol for the duration of the match. Let them kill each other, they seem to be pretty good at it.

If they get away with this, what will they ask for next? Closing all non-Islam places of worship? Government-provided goats for all single men?

Part of me wants to say, "You asked for it, now you're gonna get it!" but most of me would never wish that on anyone.

The way things are going, it won't be long before we can no longer consider the UK to be an ally. Too much rot and political drift. A worldview and rule of law far from that of our own. Canada and Australia, too, for that matter.

At first, I thought the same as most of you, but the Muslim fans will be at their home field. It makes sense to try to warn off the visiting team’s Jewish fans. Is it right? No, of course not. But you’re not going to tell the home team fans to stay away.

Either fans of both clubs are welcome to attend the match or the club with the savage fans should be forced to forfeit.

Warn them of the intelligence, but don't say they can't attend.

Make the home team responsible for the crowd and penalize accordingly. If the crazy fans have no other fans to abuse, they will eventually turn on the players. Nip it in the bud. Who in their right mind would sanction sports where a terrorism warning is necessary. It's not that important. Aston Villa forfeits.. can't control their fans.

This is wrong and disturbing on so many levels, but unfortunately not surprising having witnessed the slow societal collapse of England and other European countries.
