what happened to "thank you"
Not one clerk in any store 'round here says "thank you".they seem to think I'm there for their pleasure. I say thanks when they hand me my change/purchase, what do I get in return???....yer all set, enjoy yer day ect ect.

“ what do I get in return???....yer all set, enjoy yer day ect ect.”

Maybe better than the ever popular and gracious “no problem” as a reply to “thank you”.

You never hear "You're welcome" anymore either. The response to "thank you" is usually, "no problem", or something like that.

Edit: Arfmel beat me by a minute.

Move to the South. We still have manners here. The pace of life is slower outside the metro areas and people are nicer. Of course if more Yankees move here that will change.

Exactly correct !! We live in a small town in NC with a few big box stores. Thank you is seldom offered but at the 'mom and pop' places it common place to hear proper manners and they mean it. As customers we are the life blood of small business.
I don't mind paying a bit more for something if it supports a local merchant.

Louisiana (and probably South Carolina) are the only regions that I know of currently promoting a culture of yes sir and yes ma’am, are still taught to young children.

Last time we entertained the family from Louisiana… The kids called us Mr. first_name and Mrs. 1st_name. That’s how I was raised.

Unfortunately, you’re welcome is reserved for women who don’t say thank you when I open the door.

Some years ago, I was going into the post office one afternoon. The entrance had those big heavy glass doors. Glancing behind me, I noticed a youngish woman walking up the sidewalk behind me, so I held the door for her. About 10 feet away she starts in with the, "Typical man Roll Eyes. I'm perfectly capable of opening the door myself...". So I let it go on her and she walked right into it. I smiled.

That happens, not that often here, generally get a thank you, and if someone does it for me, I make sure to thank them...

Courtesy and kindness take very little time and effort but go a long way..

One of the many things I like about Chic-Fil-A is the requirement for courtesy from their employees.

You will never hear "no problem" in response to saying thank you.

One of these days at some other non CFA establishment I'll be in a mood and likley go off on some millennial saying "no problem" to me. "Well damn! Im glad it doesnt cause you a problem to do your job in exchange for payment, a contract that you willingly entered into with your employer."

Indeed. Wish I could have seen that.

Yes. Typical MAN, not a soyboy that generation is accustomed to dealing with, so frail that they need the door opened for them...

It's (lack of) training and (lack of) good management.
Pretty common in retail in general but now days it is the norm sadly.
Work ethic in general has been substituted with just do the minimum and get paid.
You see the difference in a different area > waitress and waiters when you can easily see the ones who are really trying to serve you and the ones who are not.

The response to "thank you" I find most annoying is "yep". Honestly? The only acceptable reply to "thank you" is "you're welcome".
