I remember learning about this as a kid. It was explained to me that once a woman reaches a certain age she should wear sensible shoes. Some time back they were the shoes the school marm wore with high tops to support the ankles. The older social workers wore them on home visits as well. These days the older set often wears tennis shoes which provide fairly good stability. She was lucky she did not fracture a hip. That is an injury that puts you out of commission for a long time. Not that long ago it was pretty much a prelude to death.
