Hordenine, abundant in malted barley - a key ingredient in the alcoholic beverage, activates dopamine receptors in the brain.

This then triggers a surge of the feel-good chemical to the decision-making area of the brain, German scientists claim…"

I choose to draw my own conclusions here.

More research will be required.

"In Mesopotamia (ancient Iraq), early evidence of beer is a 3900-year-old Sumerian poem honoring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing, which contains the oldest surviving beer recipe, describing the production of beer from barley via bread.[18] Approximately 5000 years ago, workers in the city of Uruk were paid by their employers in beer.[19]"

My wife and I started a long-term study of the difference a yeast strain makes in beer taste. We are conducting this at White Labs, San Diego, epicenter of the craft beer revolution. Best so far: Dortmunder Altbier.
It's hard, dirty work but somebody has to do it. My wife doesn't even drink beer, but she's interested in the microbiology.

White Labs has a tasting room in which they offer beers of the same style made with 2-4 different yeast strains as the only variable. Very interesting! They also give short tours of their facilities. Home brewers, take note.

I just returned from an Evening at Pensacola Bay brewery and the Union Public House for my birthday evening. I had a few 1845 Pils before dinner.
I can attest, beer does indeed make you happy. More so than other alcoholic beverages.
