Dealer demo vehicle
Im looking at new truck. 2019 Ram 1500 laramie pretty much loaded. MSRP is $62,500 dealer is offering it for $50,000 with all rebates and incentives included.

It was used by one of the owners for 6 months and has 5500 miles.

I never looked at a demo before and Im having a difficult time finding info on how to deduct the usage and mileage off the price. Even though the vehicle is titled as new its basically a used car.

Well, that is quite a savings. My father was a dealship manager many years ago. Demos were loaned to family members and potential customers by sales staff all the time to save wear and tear on personal vehicles. Particularly demo pickups used to tow and used to move every kind of shit and trash; often overloaded. If they come with full warranty, roll the dice.

Buy it. I bought a Corolla last August at 6500 off retail, full warranty, etc. I even git 24 months free service. I'm happy.

I got a dealer demo with 6400 miles on it and an unlimited mile warranty for four years. It was a good deal and I'll trade or sell the day before that warranty expires.

You should also get the full factory warranty. I would not be afraid to buy the truck; if you like it, buy it.

Dealerships can put up to 6000 miles on them and still sell them as new vehicles. I would check to see if the mileage counts towards the your warranty but not the time, so if they have a 36mo/36k warranty you may only get a 36 mo/30k mile warranty.

Just for comparison sake, Dennis Dillon Dodge in Caldwell, ID sells trucks for basically 80% of MSRP. I would imagine other dealers can do similar. The price you listed is about 80%. Now it does have 5,500 miles on it, but that's not a whole lot.

Also Lithia in Grants Pass, OR. I saved $12,500 off of list on my 2018 Laramie 2500, diesel, 4x4, etc. Total cost was $54,000. I ordered it with everything I wanted, and nothing I did not.

They could ship it to you for a moderate additional cost.

The vehicle looks pristine online. I have not seen it in person as it is 2 hrs away. Im not worried about that aspect. I will loose 6 months and 5500 miles off the factory 3/36 warranty.

The biggest issue is I cannot find another vehicle with the same options to compare prices. This truck checks all my wish list items which I have not been able to find on other trucks.

My main concern is how to price the vehicle and deduct for the mileage and time lost.

Did you get prices on any comparable New trucks from other dealers???

Around here 10-12k off MSRP American trucks is not uncommon deal might not be so good. End of model years have seen up to 20k off.

As for Demos my 2000 Silverado Z71 was bought as a demo with around 3k miles. 19 years later she is still rolling strong.

Talking to another dealer now who is only around 9k off. So im trying to figure if 3k off sticker is worth the 6 months lost warranty and 5500 miles.

You might want to do a bit more research before writing that check. I did a quick eBay query of 'New' 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie trucks. Virtually every truck that came up could be bought for 'less' than $50k (most with asking prices around $47k) with zero miles. And those were asking prices, so with a bit of work, your final price should be lower.

Unless your dealer will offer up the demo truck you're looking at in the low $40k's, I'd suggest you opt for a new truck elsewhere.

Make the dealer a low ball offer. You have nothing to lose. If he wants to sell the truck he’ll come back with a counteroffer. No big deal. Have him include an extended warranty. That will more than make up for six lost months on the original.

Price it like a used car with that many miles on it. It isn't new, despite the law that allows them to title it as a new car.

Are you certain you will lose any warranty?

That’s just not enough off the msrp for a truck with that many miles on it. It’s now a used vehicle. I bought a new 2018 Chevy truck with 9 miles on it last year and got $12k off the msrp. I looked at demos from all the manufacturers and there was never a big enough difference in price to lose any warranty. You will lose the time and mileage on a factory warranty. The only thing that could offset it is if the dealer extended it through their service department.

You have to look at the add on packages. This truck as close to 7k in options those trucks do not have.

12,500 off of a $62,500 car is a 20% discount.

20% is a good deal if it were new.

But the truck isn't new.

Sounds like they they got to drive around in your new truck for 6 or more months for free.

I don't care what add's it has. When you can run a query on eBay Motors and come back with over 200 brand new 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie edition trucks, and with few exceptions, virtually all of them price out at $47k or less, that demo truck at $50k is a bad deal. Period. And I handle a number of car purchases for family and friends every year given my background, so I have a pretty good perspective on new car pricing and what is and isn't a deal. In Florida, I wouldn't pay $50k for a brand new, zero miles, fully loaded 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie.

Here ya go. Brand new Laramie Sport edition with all the goodies for less than $50k before you even start to negotiate 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie Sport Edition 4x4. Don't like black? How about red for a couple grand less. This one could likely be bought for ~$45k with a bit of negotiation. Or my favorite color on a nicely equipped Laramie for less than $45k?

I just saved you ~$5k+ and got you into a brand new, zero miles, no compromises, RAM 1500 Laramie. Where's my commission check? Smile
