I recently got a FB acct. What a mess. I don't get it. When I log on, there's all these anecdotes about some event.

They have a line or two, with a "see more" option. There's a picture of some iconic event underneath.

Then you click on "see more" and there's more to the narrative but it doesn't end. So you click on the picture but all that does is enlarge the picture.

I'd like to see the end of their (made up) story. ??

Also, if you're looking for an old buddy. John Doe from Topeka, Kansas. You get all the John Does on record. Then all the Johns. Then the Does. Then the history of Topeka. No way to limit the search options?

But I can see how Marketplace can be useful. I might be using that at some point in the future.

Yes, and a lot of what you see is AI generated. Makes for pretty unpleasant browsing.

I just use it to get fishing reports in a private group or to get technical advice in groups about specific machinery.

You just type in something like "local fishing reports" or "John Deere tractor?" Does FB allow "AR15 groups?"

Yes. There are several groups dedicated to AR15s. In my case, an example of my searches are: "fishing reports for Chesapeake Bay" or " Kubota skid steer owners" or "spider lift owners and operators". The better groups are private and you just have to ask to join.

FB has changed the algorithm to feed tons of irrelevant stuff, while omitting posts from friends and from groups one is a member of. So you'll see lots of crap in your feed.

Joining a specific interest group works pretty well to network with like-minded people. You will get fed similar groups, too.

Yes, as rduckwor said there is a ton of AI crap on there.

Beware scam ads! One might think, but would be wrong, that a paid ad on FB is a legit merchant. Never click on a link! Even if it looks like it is from a merchant you frequently do business with.

Marketplace is full of scams and jerks.

I use it to follow some radio, astronomy, guitar and electronics groups. No news feeds.

It has a place.

The stupidity of the people you will be placed in contact with via Marketplace will astonish you.

Occasionally you will get lucky. I have a buddy who often uses it and always bitches about people setting up times to look at stuff and then no-showing. Crazy low-ball offers. Etc.

Marketplace and specialized groups are the only things with value. I started a new side business back in June and joined a few groups related to that. Im always buying and selling used stuff for my kids. I have zero FB friends, and I decline or ignore any friend requests, even from people I know.

I left Facebook for nearly 4 years after the whole 2020 debacle and recently returned to be able to keep up with some family and friends stuff, and it’s shocking frankly that it’s like 90% AI bullshit now, I barely see anything from my family or friends. About to shut it all back down again.

Zuckerberg ruined what was once a fun and useful tool.

Marketplace is the only useful thing as far as I am concerned. Half the stories/anecdotes etc. posted are all made up anyway. Most is cut from somewhere else and people will post it on FB without even verifying if it is fake or not.

The rest is women (or AI women) using sex to get money from stupid men who are too dumb to know it is AI or too dumb to know that the real women would never give them the time of day. But they will take your money…

If you are planning to sell on FB marketplace or on Nextdoor, be warned that for some reason there are idiots that just get a thrill out of screwing with people. They will say they want to buy it, set a date and time to come, and then never show up. It happens probably 95% of the time. I absolutely no longer will hold an item for someone for this reason. I say that it is for sale and first to come get it, gets it and I am sorry if someone drives only to find out someone beat them to it. I say I will remove the post as soon as it is sold but I am not holding anything for anyone. I also don’t give my address up front. I tell them a close cross street and to text me when they are there and then I will give them the address.

We recently gave a king size bed mattress and box frame away for free that was only used a few months. It was in pristine condition. The condition was you had to take both the mattress and box springs. Someone said they absolutely needed it and gave a sob story how they lost everything. They came and loaded the mattress and said since the box springs couldn’t also fit that they would be right back as they lived 5 miles away and would come back for the box springs. They obviously only wanted the mattress as they never came back, never replied to our calls, and then blocked us on Facebook then leaving me with only a set of box springs to have to try to get rid of. My gut told me to make them to take the box springs first. People suck.

I avoided FB for many years. I joined recently as I wanted some information from a group which made it mandatory you join their group to see any of it.
There is so much fucking shit on FB. Stories, if political, are mostly horseshit. I detest the click bait. It's a fucked up mess.

Truth. You seldom see posts from friends and tons of advertising and shit you really aren't interested in. A mere shell of what once made it popular and useful.

For some reason I'm getting tons of mini vids re crafts and finish carpentry tricks. I'm amazed how many people film their time consuming and intricate little craft doodles which serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

I'm more amazed that I watched until the end.
