Get my pies outta the oven! |
Does anyone have any insight on this? It’s maddening! I can’t be the only one with this issue: AT&T’s regular mobile data is called LTE and is normally quite fast in most areas. Well they are rolling out this (phony) “5Ge” to areas and it’s total crap on my iPhone when that mobile network shows up. Texts will get stuck sending, you can barely go online, it’s just awful. I’ll get back to an area with LTE and it’s fast as can be again, WTH? Does anyone else see this with AT&T? (I say phony because there’s no true 5G yet in the USA unlike a lot of other places in the world)

I don't have an answer to your question, but I ran into the same kind of thing when we were with Sprint and they embarked on a big network-wide upgrade. It went on for months. I finally got fed up and moved us to T-Mobile. "America is at that awkward stage. 5GE is a pared down version of 4G LTE. It is not a fifth gen (5G) service. It caps out around 30-40Mbps, depending on service provider. It's actually been around for a while, so I don't know why you're only getting it now. If I were you, I'd try to find a way to force your phone to only accept LTE service. Not sure about 5Ge, but I don’t think iPhones support 5G yet. If you go to Settings > Cellular Data Options > Voice and Data, my iPhone 8 only has 3G, and LTE.

Thank you Very little |
I see it from time to time and have had some "buffering" if you will, for the most part my wireless data has been fine on eye fone with att, they are not the best IMHO.. Going back to Verizon after the end of the year when att deal is up, Never had as much issues with cell coverage or data with Verizon, the network is significantly better.

I'd say "Wow, AT&T strikes again," but T-Mobile did a similar thing with 4G, years ago. They had an enhanced 3G networking technology that provided near-4G performance, which they gave some name that would leave some to believe they had 4G connectivity. 5GE: AT&T's Misleading Label on iPhone "America is at that awkward stage. Class action lawsuit time for false advertising. ATT had fake "4G in" 2012 which was really 3G+, barely. Now they are at it again with fake "5G'. I switched to Verizon for the last time in 2012 and haven't looked back. My home security system cell card was Verizon too, but in a recent upgrade my alarm guy sent an AT&T one. Not that it makes a whole lot of difference but I don't want any of my business going to AT&T for any reason. No AT&T landline, no cell, no U-Verse, no nothing. Everything they touch turns to suck.

I actually worked for their fraud unit for awhile. That said, when they bought Cricket Mobile, I started looking for alternatives. I am in my first full billing period at Patriot Mobile and find they have very good service. This includes a driving trip between Colorado and Nevada. As good, if not better than Cricket even with Cricket using AT&T towers. Patriot Mobile is also a supporter of conservative causes.

Which is why I stated this in my OP: (I say phony because there’s no true 5G yet in the USA unlike a lot of other places in the world)

Well, you're half right. 5G is severely limited to only a few cities. Even though the iPhone 12 is designed for 5G, most people won't see coverage under that network--most likely even in the time before the next phone is introduced.
